Martand Sun Temple: Historical Significance
The temple was built in the 8th century CE by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota Dynasty. Some historical accounts suggest its foundation may have been laid earlier between 370–500 CE by King Ranaditya. Martand Sun Temple represents a blend of Gandharan and Gupta architectural influences, showcasing the syncretic style of early Indian temple design.
Unfortunately, the temple suffered destruction in the early 15th century when Sultan Sikandar Shah Miri (Sikandar Butshikan) ordered its demolition during a period of religious conflict. Despite this, the ruins have survived, retaining their grandeur and historical value.
