What Is Chagas Disease?

Chagas disease, or American sleeping sickness, is an unusual parasitic disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Their primary mode of transmission is the kiss of the triatomine bugs, or “kissing bugs,” that like to bite human faces while they are sleeping. Though they have hidden traits, they are predominantly found across Latin America. Recent studies discovered that they have also migrated to 32 states in the US, including California, Arizona, Texas, and Tennessee. This new information is concerning for the spread of the disease in the rest of North America.

How Is Chagas Disease Transmitted?

Chagas disease transmission starts when a kissing bug bites a person, usually on the face, and then defecates bite later. The parasite present in the feces can then enter the body through the conjunctival membranes in the eyes or mouth. The disease can also be spread through the consumption of infected food, blood, and organ transplants, as well as during pregnancy.

Symptoms and Health Risks

Chagas disease progresses in two phases:

Acute Phase: The initial acute phase comes with a few signs and symptoms, which include fever, malaise, and swelling of the infected site. However, in most cases, the person’s health condition is far worse during this stage.

Chronic Phase: Years or even decades after the initial infection, the disease may enter the chronic phase if not properly treated. About 20–30% of persons experience severe side effects, including digestive problems such as enlarged colon or oesophagus and cardiac problems like heart failure and arrhythmias.

Prevention and Protection

There are no vaccines to prevent Chagas disease as of now. People who live or travel in regions where kissing bugs are common should take care of following precautions to reduce the risk of infections

Use Insect Repellents: Apply insect repellents with DEET to exposed skin.

Install Bed Nets: Use insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent bites while you sleep.

Seal Entry Points: Make sure to secure and seal houses, especially in rural areas where kissing bugs are more common.

Regular Inspections: Be on look out for signs of kissing bug in and around living spaces, particularly in the corners.

Educate and Raise Awareness: Organize awareness campaigns to educate communities about identifying signs of kissing bugs and possible next steps to avoid Chagas disease outbreak.

How to identify and treat Chagas disease?

Out of all the steps in the treatment process, the most important one is the most effective one. Primary medications, benznidazole and nifurtimox, can remove the parasite completely, but only if treatment begins during the acute phase. The goals in the chronic phase is mostly controlling the symptoms as well as loss of limb due to complications.

Global point of view

Although Chagas disease has existed in parts of Latin America for a long time, the recent increase in the United States indicates a pressing need for an increase in concern and preparedness. The Population and Public Health scientists focus attention on the need for disease tracking, prevention, and community outreach to reduce impact of the disease.
