The year 2025 was dominated by franchise fatigue, overhyped actioners, and unpredictable audience behaviour but it was the romance genre that actually passed out with flying colours.

The gentle, emotional, and often modest in ambition love stoies that have quietly rewritten Bollywood’s box-office rules.

Films like Saiyaara and the most recent release Tere Ishk Mein emerged as surprise hits, while the historic Chhaava starring Vicky Kaushal and Rishab Shetty's Kantara: Chapter 1 emerged as winners in 2025.

The pattern is no coincidence. 2025 has proved that in a landscape crowded with loud event cinema, it is the intimate love story rooted in sincerity rather than scale that is drawing audiences back to theatres.

Saiyaara became the blockbuster that nobody saw coming

Newcome Ahaan Panday and a few films old Aneet Padda’s passionate love story 'Saiyaara' is the textbook definition of a sleeper phenomenon.

Made at a moderate budget of Rs 45–60 crore, the film produced by YRF and directed by Mohit Suri opened with relatively muted expectations.

With two fresh faces and a genre that had been considered 'risky' especially in recent years, trade pundits predicted a mid-range performer at best.

Instead, Saiyaara became one of the biggest romantic blockbusters of the decade and it got a massive opening of Rs 21.25 crore, leaving everyone surprised.

Saiyaara released in theatres on July 18 this year and prior to its release there was no buzz created. The movie's collection break up left many shocked and utterly surprised at the same time.

Now many wonder, what drove this unexpected ascent? For one, audiences responded to the film’s emotional clarity.

The story’s tenderness, its unhurried pace, and its rich musical tapestry created a nostalgic return to the kind of romance Hindi cinema excelled at in the 90s and early 2000s.

It felt honest which many felt was an attribute missing from many glossy, over-produced love stories that had flopped in recent years.

A trade insider summarised its appeal aptly: “Every decade has one romance that reminds Bollywood how powerful sincerity can be. For 2025, that film is Saiyaara.”

Young audiences on social media turned Saiyaara into a social-media tidal wave. Fan edits exploded, its songs climbed music charts for weeks.

Many theatre goers shared emotional reactions after screenings of the film. Word of mouth accelerated and helped boost the footfall for Saiyaara. It eventually turned a modest film into a juggernaut.

Next came, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, again a love story starring lesser known Harshvardhan Rane and Punjabi actress Sonam Bajwa. The movie, which released with minimal marketing and a relatively modest cast, emerged as one of this year's most unexpected winners.

This romantic drama relied solely on the emotional pull and not the pre-release hype.

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat was made on a very controlled budget but the film opened quietly and witnessed a remarkable surge through word-of-mouth.

It resonated with the young audiences who connected deeply with its raw, obsessive portrayal of love.

Its music, which is slow-burn, haunting, and deeply melodic, became a cultural driver, dominating reels and playlists for weeks. Its music became one of the main factors to pull viewers into theatres.

Within the first 10 days of its release, the film crossed trade expectations and steadily climbed to become a certified sleeper hit.

What set Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat apart was its sincerity. When larger-than-life action films and star-driven romances were struggling to catch audiences attention, this intense and unexpected love story felt refreshingly grounded and scored a hit at the box office.

Critics also praised the movie and in Moneycontrol's review too, our reviewer mentioned: "‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’ is a cinematic ride of unrestrained emotion, indulgent romance, and pulsating drama. It is not a subtle love story—it is a spectacle built for audiences who revel in intensity, fiery confrontations, and music that lingers long after the credits roll. "

'Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat' was made at a budget of Rs 25 crore and it went on to gross Rs 85.43 crore (India nett) and Rs 112.03 crore (worldwide). It earned almost thrice of its modest budget and is a certified hit.

By the end of its theatrical run, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat had transformed from a quiet release into a full-fledged cultural moment. Its success proved yet again that when Bollywood taps into honest emotion, even the smallest films can rewrite box-office rules.

Tere Ishk Mein: A mid-budget love story that found its footing through emotion

Unlike Saiyaara or Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, Tere Ishk Mein had a powerful star cast - Tamil superstar Dhanush and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles.

The movie, directed by Anand L Rai, made on budget of Rs 85 crore was expected to have a decent opening. And its weekend performance actually left many surprised in the trade circles.

Its day wise collections:

Day 1 (India): Rs 16 crore

Day 2: Rs 17 crore

Opening Weekend: RS 51.75 crore

Tere Ishk Mein successfully passed the crucial Monday test and collected a whopping Rs 62.47 crore all India NBOC. The strong word of mouth has by positive word-of-mouth and an emotional connect that is reflecting strongly in its numbers.

For a mid-budget romantic drama, which didn't have any franchise backing, special effects, or built-in IP, this is a solid achievement.

The film’s emotional graph, which oscillates between obsession, heartbreak, and inner turmoil, seems to have resonated well with both the urban and tier-2 audiences.

While Tere Ishk Mein hasn't scaled to Saiyaara’s heights, but it has benefitted from a relatable, character-driven approach that brought people back to theatres. It is a demographic the film industry had been struggling to attract.

Chhaava, a sweeping historical epic, began as a star-driven event film. The film starring Vicky Kaushal and current favourite Rashmika Mandanna became one of the early hits of the year 2025.

The film's patriotic fervour attracted many to the theatres and people were seen heaping praises on Vicky Kaushal, calling it a master piece performance.

This is not new: Jodhaa Akbar and Bajirao Mastani had similar patterns. But 2025 reaffirmed that a strong emotional or romantic spine enhances longevity, even for films built on spectacle.

1. High Risk in big-budget action, low risk in romance

By 2025, the economics of Bollywood had tightened. Historically speaking - any actioner costs anywhere between Rs 200 - 300 crore but romance, on the other hand, remains relatively inexpensive.

Result - Producers have realised that lean budgets plus high emotional payoff is equivalent to safest bet in an unstable box-office climate.

2. Audience fatigue

The last few years in movies we saw too many anti-hero action films which ended up having repetitive VFX-heavy worlds, and stories were secondary to the entire packaging.

By early 2025, viewers were visibly exhausted. Romance offered the opposite: a return to simplicity, intimacy, and heartfelt storytelling.

A Delhi-based exhibitor put it bluntly: “People are tired of noise. They want something that feels real again.”

3. Fresh faces over star power

A remarkable trend in 2025 was the success of romance led by new or relatively fresh faces. Audiences found newcomer Ahaan Panday and a few films old Aneet Padda refreshing because they did not carry the baggage of stardom.

The young and new pairings began to matter more than box-office pull. Chemistry became the new currency. And romance proved the ideal genre to showcase it.

4. Good music became a cultural driver in Bollywood

Bollywood music had been struggling for years because of its repetitive remixes, generic beats, and forgettable lyrics. But the year 2025 reversed that. It was all thanks to deeply emotional, melodic albums that became phenomena, similar to the 90s music when albums like Aashiqui, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to name a few from the long list.

Like the 90s, every major romantic hit this year had many chartbusters like 'Saiyaara Tu Toh,' 'Deewaniyat' . It showed that if the audience loves the songs, half the battle is already won at the box office.

If the songs go viral, the film becomes a talking point before Day 1. This is exactly what Saiyaara and Ek Deewane Ke Deewaniyat achieved.

5. Social media and youngsters are in love with romantic movies

Romance is inherently shareable. Emotional scenes, confessions, heartbreak, all translate into short-form content, which is a current favourite on social media.

Fans made Instagram reels, edits, and aesthetic clips that easily helped carry a romantic film farther than a simple marketing campaign.

If we talk about action films, keep aside the Big Budgets but they rely on big screens and marketing but with romantic movies it is not the case they can easily thrive on small screens as well.

Romance made a surprise comeback to reclaim its lost space

Year 2025 has brought Bollywood back to a timeless truth that love stories never died, they were simply waiting for honesty.

With films like Saiyaara, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat and Tere Ishk Mein's success at box office in 2025, it proves that sincerity supersedes scale and telling stories that move people are sure shot winners.

It proves that Bollywood yet again has to go back to investing in chemistry, not pyrotechnics and foremost trust music which has been the soul of our movies in the past - if you go back to the 60s, 70s, or even the 90s era.

Keep the budgets in control and last but not the least, respect the audience’s emotional intelligence.

Some big hits like Kantara: Chapter 1, Thamma and Chhaava also prove that content is the king.
