IAS Capital of India

Ask anyone on the street: "Which state produces the most UPSC toppers?" The answer is almost always the same, Bihar.

For years, this has been the accepted truth. The state's reputation for producing IAS officers is legendary, fueled by stories of incredible determination against all odds. It’s a powerful narrative that has become ingrained in the national mindset.

But what if that common belief is actually a myth?

The real answer might surprise you. While Bihar's contribution is immense and inspiring, the data reveals a different champion. The state that has consistently produced the highest number of toppers, especially in recent years, is its larger neighbour: Uttar Pradesh.

Consider this undeniable fact: Four out of the last five UPSC toppers have been from Uttar Pradesh.

Let that sink in.

2021: Shruti Sharma (UP)

2022: Ishita Kishore (UP)

2023: Aditya Srivastava (UP)

2024: Shakti Dubey (UP)

How did this happen? The reasons are as fascinating as the revelation itself. Uttar Pradesh’s success stems from a powerful combination of a vast population creating a deep talent pool and a cultural environment that deeply values government service. Furthermore, cities like Prayagraj and Lucknow have grown into major coaching centers, while the state’s proximity to Delhi provides easier access to the capital’s vast preparation resources.

So why does the myth about Bihar persist? It's rooted in a powerful history of success and stories of aspirants overcoming extreme adversity. These stories are compelling and rightly celebrated. However, the recent numbers tell a new, equally compelling story.

This doesn't diminish Bihar's incredible legacy. It simply adds another chapter to India's UPSC story. It shows that excellence can emerge from multiple places, challenging our assumptions and reminding us that success is not confined to a single region.
