Nag Panchami holds deep religious importance in Hinduism. According to tradition, offering prayers to snakes on this day is believed to directly reach the divine serpent gods. This is why people worship live snakes or idols as a symbolic gesture to seek the blessings of Nag Devta. The day is considered especially auspicious in the month of Shravan, which is sacred to Lord Shiva, who is often depicted wearing a serpent around his neck.
Which Nag Devtas Are Worshipped?
On Nag Panchami, devotees offer prayers to several serpent deities. The twelve major Nag Devtas worshipped during the puja include:
- Ananta
- Vasuki
- Shesha
- Padma
- Kambala
- Karkotaka
- shvatara
- Dhritarashtra
- Shankhapala
- Kaliya
- Takshaka
- Pingala
Reciting their names and chanting Nag Mantras during the puja is said to bring protection and spiritual strength.
Nag Panchami Puja Vidhi

- Offer milk, turmeric, flowers, and sweets to the symbol or a snake idol.
- Chant Nag Panchami mantras for protection and divine blessings.
- Avoid digging the earth on this day, as it's considered disrespectful to Nag Devtas.
Regional Variations of Nag Panchami- Nag Chaturthi / Nagul Chavithi: Some people observe a fast on the day before Nag Panchami, known as Nag Chaturthi. In Andhra Pradesh, this vrat is celebrated after Diwali and coincides with Soora Samharam festivities in Tamil Nadu.
- Nag Pancham in Gujarat: In Gujarat, Nag Panchami, also known as Nag Pancham, is observed 15 days later, during Krishna Paksha Panchami of Shravan. It is usually celebrated three days before Janmashtami.
- Bola Choth (Bahula Chauth): Celebrated a day before Nag Pancham in Gujarat, Bola Choth is dedicated to cow worship. Devotees pray for the well-being of cattle, especially cows, on this day.
