MNS warns Kapil Sharma for referring to Mumbai as ‘Bombay’ on The Great Indian Kapil Show

Noted comedian and actor Kapil Sharma is in trouble. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has objected to The Great Indian Kapil Show's host, Kapil Sharma, referring to Mumbai as "Bombay" or "Bambai" on the show.

And he was also warned against using the city's former name (Bombay). MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar called it an insult to the city and its people.

Ameya Khopkar took to his social media handle and lashed out at Kapil Sharma for mispronouncing the city's name. Along with the tweet, he also shared a clip from the Netflix show.

The video clip is from an episode of the show that featured Shilpa and Shamita Shetty, along with actor Huma Qureshi and her brother Saqib Saleem.

In the video, Huma is speaking about her close bond with her brother and actor Saqib Saleem. In the flow she says we have come from outside and are not from “Bombay."

Ameya Khopkar wrote in Marathi: बॉम्बेचे मुंबई अधिकृत नामकरण होऊन ३० वर्षे झाली तरी अजूनही बॉलिवूडमधील मधील कपिल शर्मा शोमध्ये सेलिब्रिटी गेस्ट, दिल्लीस्थित राज्यसभा खासदार, शो अँकर आणि अनेक हिंदी चित्रपटात सर्रास बॉम्बे हा उल्लेख होत आहे. १९९५ मध्ये महाराष्ट्र शासनाने व १९९६ मध्ये केंद्र शासनाने अधिकृत मान्यता दिल्यानंतर चेन्नई, बेंगळुरू व कोलकाताच्याही आधी मुंबई झाले आहे. तरी याचा मान राखून मुंबईचा उल्लेख करावा, हा विनंतीवजा वजा इशारा देण्यात येत आहे. “

Even after 30 years of Bombay’s official renaming as Mumbai, 'Bombay' is still being used in shows like The Kapil Sharma Show. Delhi-based Rajya Sabha MPs, anchors, and several Hindi films. The Maharashtra government approved the change in 1995, and the central government gave recognition in 1996, even before Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Hence, it is a request and also a warning to respect the name and use “Mumbai” in all references. He also tagged Netflix in the post.

According to Live Mint, Amey said, "You (Kapil Sharma) have been working in Mumbai for so many years... Mumbai has been your 'karmabhoomi' (land of work). The people of Mumbai like you and watch your shows. Mumbai is in our hearts; don't insult this city, and don't insult the people of Mumbai... I am warning Kapil Sharma.”

“I request of you that if this has happened by mistake, then correct the mistake... Whoever comes on your show, whether they are celebrities or the anchor, tell them first that they must not call Mumbai Bombay or Bambai. They must say Mumbai. If this does not happen, then the MNS will launch a strong agitation," he added.

Talking about Kapil, along with hosting the show on Netflix, Kapil is also shooting for his films. His show's format is such that celebrity guests are invited and they interact about their projects and have fun.

Archana Puran Singh, Sunil Grover, and Kiku Sharda are a part of the show, which airs on Netflix.
