Former Miss World contestant Sherika De Armas died, at the age of 26, last week after a two-year long battle with cervical cancer, a New York Post report said. De Armas was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2021 and had undergone many treatment procedures, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The reigning Miss Uruguay Carla Romero mourned the 26-year-old's death in an Instagram post and referred to her as "one of the most beautiful women I've met in my life,".
"Too evolved for this world. One of the most beautiful women I've met in my life, on the outside it's obvious but on the inside you don't imagine.
I'm not one to share these types of moments on social media but you all already know.. stay with this message," Romero wrote in the caption of her post.
De Armas, who represented Uruguay at the beauty pageant in 2015 held in China, did not make the top 30 at the contest but was one of six 18-year-old women to participate.
In a 2015 interview, she had revealed her ambitions of becoming a model and said that she liked everything about the fashion world.
"I always wanted to be a model, whether a beauty model, an advertising model or a catwalk model. I like everything related to fashion and I think that within a beauty pageant, any girl’s dream is to have the opportunity to participate in Miss Universe. I am very happy to be able to live this experience full of challenges," De Armas had said.
Cervical cancer affects women over 30 and can be prevented with HPV vaccine and regular screening.
