After the brutal police assault in Alabama left an Indian Sureshbhai partially paralysed, the United States has apologised. In a letter to India's consul general in Atlanta, the Governor of Alabama has regretted the use of excessive force. He has assured thorough investigation into the case and has promised that the government will do everything to ensure that justice is served. A parallel probe into the attack has also been launched even as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is already probing the case."I deeply regret the unfortunate use of excessive force by the Madison Police Dept on Sureshbhai Patel. I have instructed a parallel investigation be launched. I wish to assure the Indian govt that we will see that justice is done," he said. The apology comes after the Indian government stepped in and sent the consul general to meet local authorities. The attack has invoked anger and shock among Indian Americans. The community till Tuesday, had raised nearly USD150,000 for the medical treatment of Patel, who does not have a health insurance. He had come to the US recently to help his son and daughter-in-law with their new baby and does not has a health insurance. His medical bill is alone expected to be more than USD 250,000.The Madison City Police has apologized to Patel for excessive use of force and has suspended one police officer Eric Parker. He was arrested this week, but has been released on bail.Fifty seven-year-old old Patel was forcibly slammed on a walkway in a neighborhood of Madison City on the morning of February 6, without any provocation merely because he did not know English and was unable to answer to queries of the police about his identity and address.
