A Bengaluru woman recently lost just over Rs 48,000 after trying to buy four dozens of eggs for Rs 49, a Times of India report said.

The 38-year-old woman, a resident of Vasanthnagar area of the city, found an advertisement on her email on February 17 which claimed that a popular firm was selling eggs at very low prices.

The woman scrolled down the ad to find various offers and opted for the offer, whereby she would pay Rs 49 for four dozens of eggs.

"There was a shopping link mentioned on the ad. When I clicked on the same, it took me to a page where there was a description of how hens were reared and the eggs collected and delivered."

"I chose to buy four dozen eggs for Rs 49. When I proceeded to place the order, it took me to a contact information page," the woman said.

The woman entered her card details and clicked to place the order, upon which she learnt that there was only payment options through credit cards. She proceeded to pay, but ended up losing nearly 10 times the amount from her account.

"I entered my details and clicked on it to place the order. It took me to the next page where they had payment options only through credit cards. I entered my credit card details, including the expiry date and CVV number, and clicked on 'proceed to payment'. I received an OTP on my registered mobile number. Before I entered the OTP, a total of Rs 48,199 was debited from my credit card account (and was transferred) to an account named 'Shine Mobile HU'." the woman said.

The woman received a call from officials in the bank's credit card section regarding the payment and was later directed to file a complaint at a local police station by cyber crime officials.

"I explained to them about the fraud and they blocked my account. I called the cyber crime helpline (1930) and they directed me to lodge a complaint at the nearest police station," she said.

She followed the instruction and filed the complaint, following which a case was registered under the IT act and further investigation into the incident was ongoing.
