After six quarters, Xiaomi reclaimed the top spot, capturing an 18% market share with 6.7 million units shipped. Vivo closely followed, shipping 6.7 million units, boosted by affordable 5G and mid-range models.
The official, without naming any company, said that IT hardware production in the country is expected to repeat the success that has been achieved in mobile phone manufacturing under the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
Analytics firm Canalys said the total shipments of desktops and notebooks were down by 11.5% with a total of 62.1 million units. This follows two consecutive quarters of PC shipments decline by over 30%.
South Korean giant Samsung, however, had a 24 percent market share in Q1 2022, up from 22 percent in the year-ago period.
Apple has weathered the supply crunch better than many other companies due to its massive purchasing power and long-term supply agreements with chip vendors even though iPhone 13 production hit a snag due to factory closures in Asia and high demand in the second half of the year.
Canalys analysts also forecast 5G smartphone shipments will surpass 4G models in 2022.
For the full year, Indian smartphone market grew by 8 per cent, reaching a total of 148 million smartphones, it added.
While the Chinese smartphone market still contracted by 3% in the third quarter compared to a year earlier, Huawei smartphones made up 41.5 million of the 97.8 million shipped in the period, giving it a 42% market share, according to data from market research firm Canalys.

Mumbai-based iBall claimed a 15.6 percent share of India's tablet market in the fourth quarter of 2014, up from 4.5 percent a year earlier, as Samsung's share shrank to 12.9 percent from 17.9 percent, According to IDC.
Canalys said Micromax, based near New Delhi, accounted for 22 percent of smartphone sales in India in the October-December quarter, ahead of Samsung's 20 percent. In total, 21.6 million smartphones were sold in India in the period, a 90 percent surge from a year earlier
Samsung had a 21 percent share of China's smartphone market in the third quarter of 2013, with Apple trailing in fifth place with just 6 percent, according to research firm Canalys.
