Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst - Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities

Gold traded positive with gains of Rs 700, closing around Rs 1,27,750, supported by firm COMEX levels near USD 4,225. Festive demand in India continues to lend strength to prices, though post-festive profit booking may emerge as traders lock in gains.

The focus this week will remain on the US CPI and Core CPI data, which could guide market expectations on the Fed’s next rate action.

The prolonged US government shutdown has also kept a premium built into gold prices, sustaining its safe-haven appeal. The trading range is expected between Rs 1,25,000 and Rs 1,30,000.

The technical setup remains positive as long as the index stays above 25,700, below which it may move back into consolidation.

The Indian market extended its positive momentum, driven by better-than-expected Q2 results from major companies and festival optimism. Positive global cues further bolstered investor sentiment, with easing trade narratives between the US-China and rise in European market led by defense stocks. Additionally, improved FII inflows in the cash market turned the domestic market into a net buyer in October, following three consecutive months of selling.

PSU banks and mid-sized financial services led the charge, benefiting from potential acquisitions and improvement in margins & asset quality as per Q2 results. The oil industry also experienced notable gains, thanks to declining crude prices and a strengthening Indian rupee.

India's equity market poised for a stronger Samvat 2082 on earnings revival

October 21, 2025· 12:19 IST

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments

The important takeaway from Samvat 2081 is India’s huge underperformance. Even though there are many reasons, including Trump tariffs, for this underperformance, the single major factor is the sharp decline in India’s earnings growth to 5% in FY25 from average 24% during the three years before that. Since “ in the long run the market is a slave of earnings” the major trend, going forward, will depend on how earnings growth pans out.

The fiscal and monetary reforms implemented this year has started showing results. Particularly, the sales of automobiles and white goods have shot up early this festive season and, if this trend sustains, earnings growth will be good at around 8 to 10% in FY 26, accelerating to around 15 % in FY 27.

If this expectation materialises, the market will rally in Samvat 2082 compensating for the underperformance of Samvat 2081. In the short run the market may get a leg up from a possible India- US trade deal, but the long-term trend will be dictated by earnings growth.

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets began the week on an upbeat note and extended their upward momentum, largely supported by favorable domestic cues. The Nifty index opened firm with a gap-up and moved higher initially, followed by a range-bound phase till the end. It eventually settled at 25,843.15, up 0.52%.

On the sectoral front, a mixed trend kept participants engaged, with IT, pharma, and banking leading the gains, while metal and auto traded on a muted note. The broader markets also displayed resilience, as both the midcap and smallcap indices advanced in the range of 0.4%–0.7%.

The market’s strength was underpinned by upbeat quarterly results from heavyweights such as Reliance, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank, along with expectations of sustained foreign inflows amid improving global risk sentiment. Additionally, the recent moderation in U.S. Treasury yields and a softer dollar further lifted investor confidence.

The continued buoyancy in the banking pack, coupled with rotational buying across other sectors, is driving the index higher with each passing session. As the Nifty approaches the 26,000 mark, some consolidation cannot be ruled out before a fresh breakout; however, the overall bias remains positive, with immediate support around 25,650 and major support near 25,450. We recommend maintaining a “buy on dips” approach, focusing on large-cap and quality midcap stocks that are showing consistent relative strength.

Nandish Shah - Deputy Vice President, HDFC Securities

The Nifty extended its winning streak for the fourth consecutive session, closing 133 points higher, or 0.52%, at 25,843. Over the last four trading sessions, Nifty has added nearly 700 points, continuing the strong upward momentum that began from the 24,587.

Among Nifty constituents, Cipla, Reliance Industries, and Bajaj Finserv emerged as the day’s top performers, providing support to the index. However, ICICI Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, and JSW Steel came under pressure, ending as laggards in today’s trade.

Sector-wise, barring Nifty Auto, Nifty Metal, and Nifty FMCG, which closed marginally lower, all other sectoral indices finished in positive territory. PSU Bank, IT, and Healthcare indices led the charge with strong gains, reflecting broad-based market optimism.

The broader markets mirrored this strength, with the Nifty Midcap 100 advancing 0.75% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rising 0.46%. Market breadth was decisively positive, as indicated by a BSE advance-decline ratio of 1.45.

The Indian rupee began the week on a firm note, appreciating by 4 paise against the US dollar to settle at 87.93. The up move was largely driven by a drop in crude oil prices and strong equity markets.

Nifty is in continuation of a strong uptrend and the only visible resistance on chart is at an all-time high of 26277. On the downside, 25600 could offer near term support.

Diwali Muhurat Trading 2025: Why this one-hour session is special for investors?

October 21, 2025· 11:45 IST

Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Lead at VT Markets

Gold prices have risen over 50% this year, fueled by a weaker USD, expectations of lower interest rates, strong central bank buying, and heightened geopolitical tensions. After touching a new all-time high of $4,381.21 per ounce on Monday, prices inched lower by 0.3% to $4,340.99 as investors began booking profits following the record run. Sustaining the rally could prove challenging, especially near the key $4,000–$4,400/oz psychological zone, though the broader bullish drivers remain intact.

If the Federal Reserve’s upcoming commentary signals deeper rate cuts or geopolitical risks intensify, gold could regain upward momentum. However, a stronger USD or a rise in real yields may lead to short-term corrections of around 5–10%.

For retail investors, there remain several ways to gain exposure even at these elevated levels. Digital or gold investment accounts offer convenient, low-entry access, while gold ETFs such as SPDR GLD provide liquidity and cost efficiency. More experienced investors can consider futures, options, or CFDs for leveraged exposure, or even gold-mining equities for higher but riskier returns.

Investors should adopt a disciplined approach gradually entering positions through dollar-cost averaging, diversifying across instruments, and tracking key triggers like U.S. inflation data and Federal Reserve guidance. Gold continues to be a compelling hedge and portfolio diversifier, but prudent risk management and awareness of volatility are essential to navigate the current market phase.

Sensex Today | Yen weakens after Takaichi elected as Japan's PM

The yen slid after hardline conservative Sanae Takaichi was elected as Japan's first female prime minister, as investors bet that the move could bring about a muddied rate outlook and greater fiscal largesse.

The Japanese currency was last down 0.4% at 151.38 per dollar.

In the broader market, currencies were mostly rangebound on Tuesday, though the dollar reversed its losses from earlier in the session as it drew support from a weaker yen.

Sterling was down 0.16% to $1.3383, while the euro fell 0.1% to $1.1630, little helped by easing political uncertainty in France.

The U.S. dollar index was up 0.16% at 98.77, while the Australian dollar fell 0.21% to $0.6499.

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

The upside momentum continued in the market for the fourth consecutive sessions on Monday and closed the day higher by 140 points. After opening with an upside gap of 114 points, Nifty moved up further in the early part of the session and later shifted into a range bound action in the mid to later part of the session. The opening upside gap remains unfilled.

A reasonable positive candle was formed on the daily chart with long upper shadow. Technically, this market action indicates an uptrend continuation pattern with minor volatility at the highs.

We observe decisive breakout of the crucial hurdle of around 24500 levels as per daily and weekly chart and the market is in a sharp up trended movement post breakout. This is positive indication.

The underlying trend of Nifty continues to be positive. The next upside levels to be watched around 26300 in the next one week. However, having moved up sharply minor consolidation or dip can't be ruled out in the short term, which could be a buying opportunity. Immediate support is placed at 25700.

The Nifty 50 has consistently closed in positive territory during the last five Muhurat trading sessions (2020–2024), delivering returns in the range of 0.40% to 0.90% on each occasion. With a blend of supportive technical indicators and improving fundamentals, overall market sentiment remains optimistic.

The Union Budget 2025–26’s announcement of zero income tax for individuals earning up to Rs. 1 lakh per month, coupled with the government’s move to rationalize the four-tier GST structure into two primary slabs, underscores a strong policy focus on stimulating domestic consumption.

Consequently, consumption-oriented stocks are expected to stay in focus. From a technical perspective, the broader outlook for the Nifty 50 remains constructive, and the “buy-on-dips” strategy is likely to prevail. Any corrective move towards the 25000–24800 zone could offer an opportunity to initiate fresh long positions, with initial upside targets placed around 25650–25700 levels.
