Synthetic and non-organic Holi colours can take a toll on your hair. These colours often contain harsh chemicals that can severely impact hair health. Many of these colours are made with industrial dyes, heavy metals, and other toxic compounds that can cause damage in multiple ways.
Prevention is key when it comes to protecting your hair from chemical-filled Holi colours, says celebrity hair designer Darshan Yewalekar. “Simple steps like oiling, tying up your hair, and post-Holi hair nourishment can make a huge difference,” he advises and shares tips to help you take the right care and enjoy the festivities without worrying about hair damage.

Apply a generous amount of coconut or almond oil before stepping out for Holi. “This helps create a protective layer over your hair, preventing colours from penetrating the roots. Sleek oiled hairstyles make post-Holi washing much easier while keeping the hair hydrated,” suggests Yewalekar. Another effective method, he says, is tying your hair up in braids or buns, which minimises exposure and tangling. “Braiding your hair isn’t just a stylish choice; it’s a practical one too. Dutch braids, French braids, or even a simple bun can protect your hair from direct colour damage,” he says.
Extra protection: A scarf or bandana is a trendy and effective way to protect hair from harmful colours and UV rays. “Kareena Kapoor Khan has mastered the scarf look, and it’s not just about style—it keeps hair covered, oiled tresses discreet, and prevents damage. Scarves pair well with various hairstyles, whether it’s a low bun, a high ponytail, or loose braids, adding a bohemian touch while shielding hair from harmful pigments,” says Yewalekar.
Another crucial post-Holi step is deep conditioning to restore moisture. “Choose a hydrating mask with natural ingredients like aloe vera, honey, avocado, or argan oil to repair hair damage. Kiara Advani’s shiny tresses are a result of consistent deep conditioning with nourishing masks. They work wonders in reviving post-Holi hair,” Yewalekar adds.

Post-holi care:
After you have done playing with colours it is important to wash your hair thoroughly with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo to remove colours while preserving moisture. “Avoid heat styling tools like straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers, as they can further weaken color-exposed hair," he says, adding, “Your hair is already fragile after Holi, so let it dry naturally and use a leave-in serum to lock in moisture. Ananya Panday’s glossy, healthy hair is a result of disciplined aftercare, avoiding excessive heat, and sticking to gentle styling techniques. By following these simple yet effective tips, you can ensure that your hair remains strong, shiny, and healthy even after the Holi celebrations."
