Come monsoon and a barrage of challenges tag along; from potential leaks and water damage to their impact on interior comfort and aesthetics. However, with careful planning and vigilance, many of these rainy-day problems can be mitigated. Preventing water leakage and maintaining structural integrity not only enhances living comfort but also preserves the value of your home over time.

“Issues like leaks, dampness, and structural damage can compromise both the safety and aesthetic appeal of interiors,” says Rachna Agarwal, Founder and Design Ideator, Studio IAAD.

Follow these tips, suggested by Agarwal, to deal with the challenges rainy season come with:

Prioritise vulnerable areas: During heavy rains, take extra care of the roof, terrace, and balcony areas. Implementing waterproofing solutions and using protective covers can significantly minimise damage. Relocating planters to avoid water accumulation and checking all electricity-operated appliances, wiring connections, and automation systems are essential to prevent accidents and enhance comfort.

Select the right  materials: Choosing materials suitable for all seasons, especially monsoons, ensures durable and adaptable interiors. Natural stones like marble or granite offer timeless beauty and high moisture resistance, ideal for flooring, countertops, and accents in luxury interiors. Proper sealing ensures these materials withstand harsh weather conditions without compromising elegance. Applying protective coatings on exterior surfaces enhances water resistance and extends the structure's lifespan.

Enhance aesthetic appeal: Look for vibrant colours and patterns that can uplift the mood of your interiors during the dreary monsoon season. Sunshine yellow, bright blues, checks, and ikats can bring vibrancy and add a new dimension to the space. These can be introduced through cushions, throws, and other accessories.

Improve ventilation: Ventilation is vital during the monsoon to minimise humidity and keep the room airy. Good cross-ventilation helps reduce dampness, while plants like Boston ferns, peace lily, areca palm, English ivy, and spider plant can absorb moisture and liven up the space. Additionally, herbs like basil, oregano, and thyme add a pleasant aroma and can be used in cooking, thus enhancing the indoor environment.

Do regular maintenance: Keep a check, identify and address the potential issues before they escalate. Regularly inspecting for leaks, cracks, and damage is important, especially in preparation for and during the monsoon season. Additionally, keeping gutters and downspouts free of debris ensures they operate efficiently.
