"Hot weather can wreak havoc on your mane with problems like increased shedding, dryness and dullness," says Dr Akshay Batra, Trichologist and Managing Director at Dr Batra’s Group of Companies. He adds, "From common issues like hair fall and dandruff to more severe concerns such as receding hairlines, the summer season can be tough on hair health."

Dr Batra stresses the importance of adopting a holistic approach to daily hair care to fight these problems and promote hair health. Here are 6 hair care tips to combat summer hair problems:

Choose clarifying shampoo: Investing in a clarifying shampoo can work wonders for removing mineral build-up from both the hair and scalp. Opt for sulfate-free, paraben-free formulas with a pH balance of 5.5. These shampoos effectively cleanse without stripping the hair of its natural oils, thus combating issues like dandruff. With increased sweating in the summer, consider washing your hair every alternate day to maintain scalp health.

Do not skip conditioning: Conditioning is essential for moisturising and detangling the hair, sealing the hair cuticle, and reducing frizz. Choose products tailored to your hair type and concerns, whether rinse-out or leave-in, to achieve softer, healthier-looking locks.

Maintain a balanced diet: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is key to good hair health. Include iron and protein-rich foods like leafy greens, chickpeas, soy, and paneer to support hair growth and maintain healthy levels of these vital nutrients.

Manage your stress: Stress can exacerbate hair problems. Practice stress-reducing techniques like mindful breathing and regular exercise. Ensure you get enough sleep and maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep stress levels in check.

Hydration is the key: Proper hydration is essential for your hair health. Aim to drink 2–3 liters of water daily to support bodily functions and regulate temperature, adjusting intake based on factors like activity level and climate.

Address underlying issues: Hair loss can sometimes be a symptom of underlying medical conditions such as PCOS, anemia, or thyroid disorders. If you experience increased hair fall during summer, consult a qualified homeopath or doctor  to address these underlying causes and devise an appropriate treatment plan.
