As you touch your hair, you feel roughness and tangles, missing the softness and smoothness you want. In the mirror, you notice dull, lackluster strands, lacking their natural shine. You might also experience dryness and scalp irritation, hinting at damage from your current hair care routine. Do you find yourself constantly disappointed by the promises of various products lining your bathroom shelves? It's time to seek a solution that will actually nourish and revitalise your hair.
When choosing hair care items, it is important to prioritise ingredients tailored to your hair type and address any specific concerns, says Dr Monica Bambroo, Head of Cosmetology and Dermatology at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram. "By discerning and selecting key ingredients in your chosen hair products, you can make informed decisions and effectively nurture and maintain your hair," she adds.
Dr Bambroo offers recommendations on ingredients for maintaining healthy hair and advises on what to seek in products:
Argan oil: Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, argan oil provides nourishment and hydration to the hair, effectively softening and managing it. This oil aids in repairing damage caused by heat styling and environmental stressors, making it a valuable ingredient for hair care products.
Biotin: Also known as vitamin B7, biotin plays a vital role in improving hair quality and encouraging growth. According to research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), biotin deficiency can lead to hair loss and thinning. Including biotin into hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners, and supplements can support hair health and vitality.
Coconut oil: One of the most commonly used hair oils, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, thus moisturising and strengthening the hair from within. It’s ability to prevent protein loss and reduce breakage, makes it a beneficial component in hair care regimens aimed at hydration and strength enhancement.
Hyaluronic acid: While commonly associated with skincare, hyaluronic acid provides hydration to the scalp, enhancing its health. Research highlights the importance of scalp hydration for hair growth and maintenance, thus emphasising the potential benefits of incorporating hyaluronic acid into hair care products.
Keratin: It is a fundamental protein in hair structure that contributes to repairing damage and reinforcing hair strength. Studies show that keratin helps in restoring hair health, especially in products designed for damaged or weakened hair.
Niacinamide: This is a form of vitamin B3, and it boosts scalp circulation and promotes healthy hair growth. Niacinamide also helps maintain the scalp's moisture balance and improves hair quality.
Panthenol: This provitamin B5, offers essential moisturisation for hair, enhancing its shine and manageability. Research indicates that panthenol strengthens hair and reduces split ends, making it a beneficial ingredient in hair care formulations aimed at hydration and strength enhancement.
Peptides: They stimulate collagen production in the scalp, promoting hair growth and thickness. Peptides play a crucial role in improving scalp health and hair density, which makes them a valuable addition to hair care formulations.
Silicone: It temporarily smooths and protects the hair shaft, reduces frizz and enhances shine. However, research suggests that silicone can lead to buildup over time, necessitating regular clarifying treatments to prevent adverse effects while enjoying its cosmetic benefits.
Sulfate-free surfactants: Sulfates can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and damage. Sulfate-free surfactants in hair care products help to cleanse gently without causing irritation or moisture loss, maintaining hair health and integrity.
