In today’s fast paced society,  integrating wellness-focused design into interiors is essential for improving health, comfort, and quality of life, says Architect Harkaran Singh Boparai, Founder and Principal Architect, Space 5. When you add wellness-focused design elements, such as stress-reducing colours, natural materials, and smart lighting, into your abode, you transform your homes into sanctuaries that enhance mental clarity, reduce anxiety, and promote satisfaction,” he adds.

Boparai shares a few ways to add wellness-focused design elements into your homes:

Circadian lighting systems: These lighting systems mimic natural daylight progression, promoting better sleep and wellness. Particularly beneficial in urban settings with limited natural light, these systems help regulate the body's internal clock by adjusting colour temperature and brightness throughout the day. Using smart sensors and LED lights, they create a balanced, health-supportive environment.

Add natural elements: Including natural elements into interiors boosts mental and physical well-being by reducing stress and encouraging relaxation. Beyond houseplants, options such as indoor fountains, green walls, and natural light features create a refreshing and harmonious atmosphere that supports well-being. They also provide tailored therapeutic benefits. Water features offer soothing sounds, living walls improve air quality and aesthetics, and aromatherapy systems disperse essential oils to aid relaxation and mental clarity.

Use sustainable and regenerative materials: Sustainable materials enhance both environmental health and indoor air quality. Advanced materials like mycelium-based composites and algae-derived bioplastics lead this trend. These eco-friendly materials reduce environmental impact by emitting fewer toxins. Mycelium-based products, for example, are fire-resistant and offer excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, making them versatile for various design applications.

Adopt wellness technologies: Smart home technology enhances wellness with advanced air purification systems that filter pollutants like pollen, dust, and harmful gases using HEPA filters, UV-C light, and activated carbon. Integrated with home automation, these systems enable easy control and customisation, adjusting climate settings based on personal preferences and health data for improved sleep and relaxation.
