If you’ve ever walked into a room and instantly smiled at an unexpected touch of whimsy, chances are some cleverly placed animal-inspired décor was at play. From cheeky monkey lamps to regal horse sculptures, these pieces do more than accessorize a space -- they bring personality, humour, and vibrancy into everyday settings.
As for current trends, animal-inspired décor is enjoying a playful resurgence in both homes and workspaces. Designers are leaning towards oversized, statement sculptures, ceramic curios, and hand-painted canvases that bring in not just humour but also layers of symbolism.
Whether in a living room that needs a touch of drama or a workspace that craves inspiration, animal art has the power to lift moods and create an instant talking point. Raseel Gujral Ansal, multidisciplinary artist and renowned interior designer is known for weaving wit and storytelling into her work. She explains, “I’m drawn to art that tells human stories through animal metaphors. By using animals as stand-ins for people, a fox for cunning, a monkey for mischief, a horse for freedom etc. one can bring wit into a room.

It’s a playful way to hold a mirror to ourselves and such pieces instantly break stiffness, spark curiosity and conversation. It makes a space feel personal and alive rather than just ‘done up.’” These elements do more than decorate; they transform interiors into reflections of human instincts, vanities, and dreams — but with a touch of humour that softens the edges.
Highlighting the standout piece
When it comes to displaying animal-inspired décor, thoughtful placement is everything. A quirky object can either elevate a room or feel misplaced if not carefully staged. Sharing some important tips Raseel mentions, “Treat each piece like a character on stage -- it needs a clear sightline above a console, anchoring a lounge wall, or closing a corridor vista. Keep the surroundings calm so the story can breathe. One strong piece often speaks louder than several competing ones; a sculpture on a clean plinth or a large canvas on a quiet wall always holds the room beautifully.” Give each piece its own spotlight, both literally and metaphorically, and let it own the space rather than compete with clutter.
Make it shine
Lighting and balance also play a pivotal role in ensuring that animal-inspired pieces harmonize with the larger décor. This approach ensures that while the animal art stands out, it never overwhelms the room. Raseel informs, “Use a warm spotlight or picture light for a painting, a soft pool of light from above or below for a sculpture. If the work is bold and dramatic, let the rest of the palette stay understated; if it’s more muted, a deep wall colour can make it sing. I like to echo just one or two cues - a metallic finish, a single accent hue, so the art feels integrated but never theme-heavy.”
