Home is where the heart is healthy and the mind is at peace, and the way you design your space plays a vital role in shaping that harmony. Thoughtful interior design choices, from lighting and layout to materials and furniture, play a pivotal role in shaping how you feel within a space.

A well-designed home can promote relaxation, improve well-being, and offer a sense of calm that allows you to recharge and thrive. According to Nishtha Dewan, Associate Director, Interiors, Morphogenesis, a home should be a reflection of the people living in it, not just aesthetically pleasing, but also emotionally nurturing. “Design choices that prioritise comfort, functionality, and a connection with nature create environments that strengthen mental well-being,” she says.

Dewan shares tips on how right design choices can transform any living space:

Declutter for mental clarity:  The first step in creating a serene home is decluttering. A cluttered space can contribute to mental overload, making it harder to unwind. “Clutter is not just a physical distraction, it affects the mind. Streamlining your space by keeping only what is essential or meaningful creates a sense of openness and calm,” says Dewan. Built-in storage solutions like wall-mounted shelves, concealed cabinets, and multipurpose furniture can help maintain a tidy atmosphere without compromising on style.

Focus on natural light: Light has a positive impact on mood and well-being. Maximising natural light can instantly uplift a space, creating an airy, positive ambiance. Studies suggest that exposure to sunlight boosts mood and regulates circadian rhythms, making spaces feel more energised and welcoming. Dewan explains, “Windows, glass doors, and sheer curtains allow sunlight to filter in, while mirrors placed strategically can amplify light. In the evenings, layered lighting, combining ambient fixtures, task lighting, and dimmable lamps, helps create a warm, inviting atmosphere that adapts to different times of the day.”

Bring nature indoors: Biophilic design, the practice of integrating natural elements into interiors, is the foundation of stress-reducing spaces. “Nature has an innate ability to soothe the mind. Adding greenery, natural textures, and water features not only improves aesthetics but also improves air quality and emotional well-being. Large leafy plants, vertical gardens, and materials like wood, stone, and rattan add warmth and texture, creating a tangible connection to the outdoors,” says Dewan. Simple additions like a tabletop water fountain or small indoor herb garden can further improves this calming atmosphere.

Comfort and functionality: Furniture plays a vital role in both comfort and functionality. Plush seating, ergonomic chairs, and well-designed sofas promote relaxation while supporting the body’s posture. “Comfortable furniture doesn't have to compromise on style. Thoughtfully chosen pieces can encourage mindful living. Opt for a cosy reading nook or a sofa designed for lounging,” says Dewan. A layout that allows for free movement between spaces prevents rooms from feeling cramped or chaotic, boosts a sense of ease.

Texture and colour for balance: Soothing colour palettes like soft neutrals, earthy tones, and muted blues, can have a calming effect on the mind. “Pairing these hues with natural textures like linen, wool, or reclaimed wood creates a layered, harmonious environment. Designing for well-being means creating spaces that engage the senses. Textures, colours, and materials all work together to provide comfort and emotional balance,” adds Dewan.
