As women age, the hormone production in their body begins to change. While some tissues become less responsive to hormones, the hormone levels may increase, decrease or stay the same. Additionally, organs producing hormones may release small amounts or work at a slower pace, thus affecting hormonal balance and health.

According to multiple studies, hormonal changes during menopause play a critical role in women's joint health. “A decline in estrogen levels reduce bone density, making bones weaker and joints more prone to stiffness,” says Dr Sharmila Tulpule, Orthopedic Surgeon & Regenerative Medicine Specialist, Founder & Director, Orthobiologix Biotech Pvt Ltd.

“Estrogen has a protective effect on bones and joints, and its loss and degeneration," explains Dr Tulpule. This hormonal shift, according to Dr Tulpule, can increase the risk of joint inflammation, making women more susceptible to injuries and fractures. “As you age, it becomes more important to get regular check-ups and eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, as this can help maintain joint health during this phase,” she adds. A lack of balanced diet, exercise and good rest may cause further harm to your joint health and routine.

Impact of joint pain on daily life:

Chronic joint pain can negatively impact a woman's quality of life. Simple, everyday tasks like walking, cooking, or climbing stairs becomes challenging. “In such cases, women often find themselves dependent on others for routine tasks, affecting their independence and self-confidence,” shares Dr Tulpule.

Additionally, when women suffer from joint pain, it also impacts their physical, mental and emotional health. “If not addressed on time, it can lead to frustration and irritability. Seeking timely treatment and staying healthy helps manage joint pain and improve mobility,” adds Dr Tulpule.

Regenerative medicine:

New advancements in regenerative medicine may help women who suffer from chronic joint pain. “Conditioned Serum (ACS) Therapy helps in repairing damaged joints and slowing down degeneration. Regenerative treatments not only relieve pain but also promote joint healing, especially in the early stages of arthritis. These non-surgical options bridge the gap between traditional medications and surgery, offering relief with minimal downtime,” she says.

Early diagnosis and treatment:

Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in preventing joint pain from worsening. Ignoring symptoms or delaying treatment can lead to joint damage and reduced mobility. Dr Tulpule suggests regular check-ups, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and seeking expert guidance to maintain joint health and prevent long-term complications.
