Former talk show host Wendy Williams has been diagnosed with progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, according to representatives for Williams. The news was shared in a press release to “correct inaccurate and hurtful rumours about her health,” a care team for Williams wrote in a statement.
“As Wendy’s fans are aware, in the past she has been open with the public about her medical struggles with Graves’ Disease and Lymphedema as well as other significant challenges related to her health,” the release read. “Over the past few years, questions have been raised at times about Wendy’s ability to process information and many have speculated about Wendy’s condition, particularly when she began to lose words, act erratically at times, and have difficulty understanding financial transactions.”
Exercise and brain health: How are the two linked?
For the unversed, aphasia is a communication disorder that affects a person's ability to speak, write, and understand language. It is often caused by damage to the brain, usually from a stroke or a head injury.
However, it could also be caused because of neurological conditions such as brain tumours or progressive neurological diseases, says Dr Manish Malviya who deals in cases of dementia in his clinic in Delhi’s Green Park.

Connection between aphasia and dementia
It is important to note that aphasia can be a symptom of certain types of dementia. Dementia is a broader term for a decline in cognitive function that interferes with daily life.
Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common type of dementia, can sometimes present with aphasia as one of its symptoms, especially in its later stages. However, not all cases of aphasia are related to dementia.

Here are some common approaches to treat aphasia:
Speech therapy: This is the primary treatment for aphasia. Speech-language therapists work with individuals to improve language skills through various exercises and techniques.
Communication aids: Using tools like communication boards, picture books, or speech-generating devices can assist in communication. These aids can supplement verbal communication and help convey messages to the patient suffering from aphasia.
Group therapy: Joining a support group or aphasia community can provide social support and opportunities to practice communication in a safe environment.
Melodic intonation therapy: This technique uses musical elements to help improve speech, says Malviya.
Visual and auditory cues: Using gestures, pointing, facial expressions, and other visual cues can aid in understanding and expressing thoughts in the patient.
Family education and support: Educating family members on aphasia and how they can facilitate communication is crucial in recovery.
