Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said obesity is emerging as a major challenge for India and that everyone must contribute to the fight against the epidemic.
Addressing the nation on the 79th Independence Day, Modi said that according to experts, one in every three persons would be obese in the coming years. "While talking about fitness, I want to express a concern. Every family in the country should be concerned that obesity is becoming a major challenge for our country. We must protect ourselves from obesity," he said.
In this direction, Modi reiterated his previous suggestion and urged families to buy 10 per cent less oil for cooking and also cut its usage by 10 per cent.

Health risks of obesity
A significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, experts say obesity can lead to coronary artery disease, hypertension, and stroke. Excess body fat, says Dr Vigyan Mishra, chief of lab, Neuberg Diagnostics, Noida, particularly around the abdomen, can spike blood pressure and cholesterol levels. These changes lead to a buildup of plaque in the arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis, which can result in heart attacks and strokes.
Type 2 diabetes
Obesity can also lead to Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells do not respond effectively to insulin, is one of the major risk factors of obesity. This resistance leads to higher blood glucose levels and eventually to type 2 diabetes, says Dr Mishra.

Joint problems
Experts say obesity can harm weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips. This excess weight accelerates the wear and tear of joint cartilage, leading to osteoarthritis. Obesity-induced inflammation also contributes to the degradation of joint tissues, further compounding joint pain and mobility issues.
Liver diseases
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is commonly associated with obesity. Excess fat storage in the liver can cause inflammation and damage, progressing to more severe conditions like non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis. NAFLD is a major risk factor for liver cancer as well, says Dr Mishra.
