During the monsoon season, respiratory infections like the common cold are prevalent due to increased humidity and the presence of viruses that thrive in damp conditions. Knowing the causes behind these infections helps understand why the common cold is particularly widespread during this time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the common cold is primarily caused by viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses. These viruses spread through droplets in the air when someone with a cold coughs, sneezes, or talks, or through direct contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.

Here are 7 home remedies that may help you combat common cold in monsoon:

Ginger teaGinger's anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe a sore throat and reduce congestion. Simply steep fresh ginger slices in hot water and add honey for sweetness. Alternatively, you can prepare masala chai by boiling ginger and cardamom with milk, which adds a comforting warmth and richness to the beverage.

Tulsi water: Tulsi, or holy basil, possesses antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties that support respiratory health. Boil tulsi leaves in water, strain, and drink warm to harness its benefits in combating respiratory infections and boosting immunity.

Turmeric milkTurmeric contains curcumin, renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Mix turmeric powder with warm milk and honey to create a soothing drink that not only helps alleviate cold symptoms but also supports overall immune function.

Honey lemon waterHoney acts as a natural cough suppressant, while lemon provides a vitamin C boost that strengthens the immune system. Mix honey and fresh lemon juice in warm water and sip throughout the day to soothe throat irritation and enhance immune response against infections.

Ajwain steam: Ajwain, or carom seeds, possesses antimicrobial properties and is effective in relieving nasal congestion. Boil ajwain seeds in water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam to clear nasal passages and ease breathing difficulties caused by colds.

Black pepper tea: Black pepper aids in clearing nasal congestion and boasts antibacterial properties. Add freshly ground black pepper to hot water, steep, and strain before drinking to reduce cold symptoms and support respiratory health. Optionally, add a free drops of lemon juice to it.

Garlic soup: Garlic is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties, making it effective in fighting cold viruses. Prepare garlic soup by boiling crushed garlic cloves in water with a pinch of salt, then sip the warm broth to help lessen cold symptoms and support immune function.
