A cheque issued by a government school in Himachal Pradesh drew widespread attention online after it was rejected by a bank for multiple spelling errors, leading to questions about standards in the education system.
The cheque had been prepared for a person named Atter Singh and issued by the principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Ronhat, Himachal Pradesh, for an amount of Rs 7,616. When written in words, the number contained several glaring mistakes. The word seven was written as saven, thousand was replaced with Thursday, hundred became harendra, and instead of sixteen, the writer put down sixty. The numerical amount, however, had been entered correctly.
Though the document carried the signature of the principal, it remains uncertain whether the principal himself had written the amount in words. Online commentators argued that even if he had not filled it out personally, he had failed to notice the errors before authorising it.

Images of the cheque began circulating widely on social media platforms, where users questioned how such oversights could occur in a government school. One comment on X read: “This is the standard of our teachers in government schools.”
Another user mocked the errors with the remark: “Fault in autocorrect system of pen!”
"Govt school principal writes cheque: 27 saven ‘thursday’ harendra and sixty. Now we finally know why students think Einstein discovered America and Newton invented electricity," a user quipped.
"Reservation hatao, desh bachao (Remove reservation, save the country)," another comment read.
Some responses went beyond humour, linking the incident to wider debates on recruitment in education. Certain posts argued that the reservation system was partly to blame, suggesting that appointments should be more merit-based, particularly for senior roles such as principals.
