When it comes to trusted natural remedies, mulethi (licorice root) has been a household favorite for generations. Scientifically known as Glycyrrhiza glabra, this powerful herb is often used to treat a wide range of illnesses.

A study conducted by Faculty of Pharmacy, Al-Isra University, Jordan, and published in PubMed, revealed that licorice exhibits anti-ulcer activity comparable to FT (famotidine) in a rat model of indomethacin-induced ulcers. Interestingly, a combination of FT and licorice demonstrated greater effectiveness in reducing ulcers than either treatment alone. This suggests that including licorice in ulcer treatment regimens could improve therapeutic outcomes.

Here are a few benefits of mulethi (licorice)

  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Mulethi has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and pain. It can help improve conditions like arthritis, skin irritation, and allergies, thus making it a valuable remedy for inflammatory issues.

  • Bacteria and virus defence: Licorice root is known for its ability to fight off infections. It contains phytochemicals that slow down viral replication and prevent bacterial growth. It’s particularly effective against bacteria like Staphylococcus and viruses such as herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV).

  • Balances hormones: Mulethi contains phytoestrogens that help regulate hormone levels. Women experiencing hormonal imbalances or menopause symptoms can benefit significantly from its natural balancing effects.

  • Natural sweetener: Mulethi is sweeter than sugar and is often used as a natural sweetener in desserts and medicines. Not only does it enhance flavor, but it also comes with added health benefits, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugar.

  • Ulcer relief: Licorice root is highly effective in treating and preventing stomach ulcers. It increases mucus production in the stomach, which protects the stomach lining and promotes healing. Additionally, it reduces gastrin production, a hormone that can trigger excess stomach acid.
Be cautious:

While mulethi is incredibly beneficial, moderation is key. Excessive use or long-term consumption can cause side effects, so it’s important to consult a doctor  if you plan to use it regularly.
