Papaya leaves are traditionally used in various cultures for their medicinal properties. They are rich in vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as antioxidants. One of their most noted uses is in the treatment of dengue fever, where papaya leaf extract is believed to increase platelet count, aiding recovery. The leaves also improve digestion by breaking down proteins. Some studies suggest that compounds in papaya leaves might have anti-cancer properties, although more research is needed. Overall, papaya leaves are a versatile natural remedy with a range of health benefits.

Let’s look at some of the health benefits beyond their well-known role in helping to treat dengue fever.

Digestive health: Papaya leaves contain papain and chymopapain, enzymes that aid digestion by breaking down proteins and supporting the gut’s digestive functions, says Mumbai-based Dr Arvind Asthana from Rama Healthcare Limited. They can help alleviate digestive disorders such as bloating, heartburn, and constipation.

Anti-inflammatory Properties: The leaves have potent anti-inflammatory effects due to the presence of compounds like papain, flavonoids, and alkaloids. This makes them useful for reducing inflammation and pain in conditions such as arthritis.

Immune system support: Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and various antioxidants, papaya leaves help bolster the immune system, protecting against common illnesses and infections, says Dr Asthana.

Blood sugar regulation: Some studies suggest that papaya leaf extract can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for managing diabetes.

Liver health: Dr Asthana says that the detoxifying properties of papaya leaves aid liver health by supporting liver function and protecting against liver diseases. They are believed to help in cleansing the liver and promoting its overall function.

Skin health: Papaya leaf juice can be applied topically to treat various skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and wounds. The antioxidants and vitamin C help in skin healing and maintaining a clear complexion.

Hair health: Papaya leaves can promote hair growth and improve hair health. The leaf extract can be used as a conditioner to control dandruff, add shine, and strengthen hair.

Menstrual pain relief: Traditionally, papaya leaf tea has been used to relieve menstrual pain and regulate menstrual cycles due to its muscle-relaxing properties.

Anti-malarial properties: Papaya leaves have shown promise in treating malaria. The leaf extracts possess compounds that can inhibit the growth of the Plasmodium parasite, which causes malaria.

Antimicrobial effects: The leaves contain antimicrobial properties that can help fight off various bacteria and viruses, thus aiding in preventing infections.

Anti-cancer properties: Some studies indicate that compounds in papaya leaves, such as acetogenin, may have anti-cancer properties. They might help in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and reducing the risk of cancer.
