When you think of mouth cancer, you often start with blaming cigarettes and chewing tobacco. But the fact is, oral cancer isn’t limited to smokers. Studies show that nearly one in four people diagnosed with oral cancer have never smoked or chewed tobacco.
Oral cancer, in India, accounts for about 40% of all cancers in the country, compared to a global average of just 5%,” says Dr Abhinav Narwariya, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi. “Over five people die every hour in India because of oral cancer, and delayed detection is a major reason why.” So, if you’ve never touched a cigarette, don’t assume you’re safe.

That sore isn’t harmless
A tiny ulcer or sore that refuses to heal after two weeks is your mouth waving a red flag. Sometimes it’s caused by sharp teeth, dentures that don’t fit, or chewing tobacco and betel nut. But risky habits aside, even a small sore can becomes a bigger problem. Also, see a dentist if it keeps coming back.
Bleeding gums are not normal
If you’re spitting out blood after brushing or notice bleeding for no reason, it could be more than just sensitive gums. Poor oral hygiene and chronic gum infections create a breeding ground for cancer cells. A good dental routine; brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups, keeps gums healthy.
Numbness that won’t go away
That odd tingling or numb patch in your mouth, face, or jaw isn’t something to ignore. Often linked to HPV infection, it can silently damage the throat and mouth lining. Don’t ignore it, talk to your doctor and ask about HPV vaccination and screening.
When eating feels like a task
If you find it hard to chew, move your jaw, or swallow smoothly, it isn't always age or stress. Alcohol, spicy food, or scalding-hot food can irritate the mouth lining and set the stage for cancer. If the problem doesn't go away, get it checked and reduce heavy irritants.

Weight loss without trying
Shedding kilos without diet or exercise sounds like a dream, but not when your body is signalling distress. Sudden, unexplained weight loss can point to advanced oral cancer. If the scale keeps dropping for no reason, see a doctor without delay.
Bad breath that outstays its welcome
Garlic breath fades, but if your bad breath lingers no matter how much you brush or pop mints, something else could be lurking. Gum disease or hidden oral lesions are often behind it. A quick dental visit and deeper cleaning usually tackle the problem before it escalates.
Patches that look suspicious
White, red, or rough patches on the tongue, cheeks, or gums are not just harmless spots. A diet low in fruits and vegetables strips your body of protective antioxidants, leaving your mouth more vulnerable. Add more colourful produce to your plate and don’t ignore unusual patches—get them checked.
