Media network ABC has indefinitely suspended the late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! after its host Jimmy Kimmel made a statement about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Jimmy Kimmel criticised what he called political opportunism from Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters over Kirk’s murder, saying they "were doing everything they can to score political points" from the tragedy.
ABC affiliates owned by Nexstar responded by preempting the show, and the network pulled the show “for the foreseeable future.”
US President Donald Trump reacted sharply and on Truth Social he wrote, “Great News for America: The ratings‐challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it, NBC!!! President DJT”
In that same line, Trump didn’t stop with Kimmel, he called out Jimmy Fallon (host of The Tonight Show) and Seth Meyers (host of Late Night with Seth Meyers), urging NBC to cancel their shows too and called them “total losers.”
Who is Jimmy Fallon?
Jimmy Fallon is a comedian and television host who rose to prominence as a cast member and ensemble performer on Saturday Night Live.
After SNL, he took over Late Night and then The Tonight Show on NBC. His comedic style leans toward variety, musical sketches, celebrity interviews, games, and light satire rather than heavy political commentary.
Jimmy Fallon often aims for broader appeal, making jokes about current events, including US President Donald Trump, but usually with a gentler tone, often mixed in with entertainment segments.
About Seth Meyers
Seth Meyers also began his fame on Saturday Night Live, notably as the Weekend Update anchor, known for sharp, satirical takes.
In 2014, Meyers began hosting Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC, where he uses a more pointed, analytical way to converse with his audience.
One of his signature segments is “A Closer Look,” in which he deep dives into political issues, controversies, media coverage, and policy actions, using video clips and news sources and often criticizing President Trump and his supporters explicitly.
Meyers tends to focus not just on satirizing but on talking about what he sees as democratic and ethical concerns in political leadership.
There are several reasons behind Trump’s tweet:
Political Retaliation: Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks were critical of both MAGA supporters and Trump, especially accusing them of exploiting Charlie Kirk’s death, which triggered backlash from conservative media and political figures. Trump’s reaction can be seen as pushing back aggressively against media figures who critique him.
Trump’s mention of Fallon and Meyers is being seen more as a warning. The two hosts often criticize Trump by explicitly targeting them.
Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers’ political views on Trump
Jimmy Fallon has occasionally joked about Donald Trump—his statements, sometimes policies—but usually in a lighter, less confrontational manner. He uses humor that many find more palatable. He mixes political satire with entertainment and avoids too many harsh attacks.
Meyers is more unrestrained in critiquing Trump. He frequently addresses Trump’s policy decisions, media lies, conflicts of interest, rhetoric, and what Meyers sees as democratic erosion.
His monologues often contain references to Trump directly, his supporters, or the consequences of his actions.
