Salman Khan, known for his candour, has recently sparked a wave of discussion around the declining quality of Bollywood films. Ironically, his sharp critique came back to haunt him as his own movie Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss, faced backlash from audiences and critics alike. In a media interaction for the film, Khan remarked, “Jab itni gandi pictures banengi toh flop toh hongi hi. Jab banti hi gandi films hain”, emphasizing that poorly made films are bound to fail.
The statement, which was initially perceived as a jab at the industry, quickly turned into a self-reflecting moment as Sikandar opened to poor reviews and underwhelming box office numbers. Even his loyal fanbase appears disappointed. Speaking further about the situation, Salman added, “Including my own film, agar acchi nahi hai to nahi chalegi”, admitting that if his own film doesn’t do well, it’s because it simply isn’t good.
In a deeper commentary on filmmaking, Salman criticised the industry’s tendency to underestimate audiences. He said, “Everyone wants to show the audience how a movie is made. No, you have to make a film for the audience… Don’t think ‘inko samajh nahi aayega’ (the audience won’t get it). How can you say that? Then you start spoon-feeding the audience. But the audience has evolved.” With OTT platforms reshaping viewership patterns, Salman pointed out how people now access global content and have raised expectations from Indian cinema.
He didn’t hold back while discussing how the blame game works in the film industry. According to him, “Film ka fail hona ya safal hona dono hi lead star par daal diya jata hai… agar film nahi chalti hai to uska blame actor par daal diya jata hai.” He stated that even when a movie fails due to poor direction or script, it’s the lead actor who ends up getting blamed.

Further underlining the importance of a strong story, he shared a valuable lesson from his father, Salim Khan: “A film should only be made when you have the best script ever. Nothing else.” Salman’s brutally honest statements, intended as a wake-up call for Bollywood, have now ironically highlighted the issues within his own project. Sikandar, predicted to be an Eid blockbuster, is instead being trolled heavily, with many believing it won’t even match the infamously ridiculed Race 3.
