Filmmaker Mira Nair is a proud mother after her son’s landmark electoral victory. Bollywood personalities rallied to send congratulatory messages to Zohran Mamdani and Mira Nair. Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar shared an Instagram story to congratulate the newly minted mayor. “Zohran, you beauty,” accompanied by ‘@pagliji This is for you’.

Mira Nair acknowledged the sentiment and reposted the message from fellow-filmmaker Zoya Akhtar.

Meanwhile, actor Ishaan Khatter added in the comments, “you go brother. May your goodness never fade.”



The moment speaks volumes about the blend of personal pride and cultural significance as Zohran Mamdani, 34, becomes the first Muslim and first person of South Asian and African heritage to hold the post.

Zohran Mamdani’s win was celebrated not just with applause and chants, but with an unmistakable Bollywood flair. As crowds roared in approval at his victory rally, the iconic Hindi film song Dhoom Machale from the 2004 blockbuster Dhoom blasted through the speakers, turning the political gathering into an electrifying cross-cultural celebration. As the opening beats of Dhoom Machale filled the air after Zohran’s victory speech, he stood on stage visibly moved, joined by none other than his mother, award-winning director Mira Nair, who beamed proudly at the crowd.

Zohran Mamdani, born to Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, will assume office on January 1 2026 as the youngest mayor the city has had in more than a century. The win signals a generational shift, as well as a milestone for representation in one of the world’s most globally visible offices.
