Torii, the stylish restaurant co-owned by Gauri Khan, has become one of Mumbai’s most talked-about celebrity destinations. The upscale Bandra eatery, known for its eclectic Asian menu and design flair, reflects Gauri’s signature aesthetic, chic, intimate, and deeply personal. But behind the glamour lies a web of fascinating details about its most famous patrons: the Khan family themselves.
In a recent interview with SCREEN, Indian Express, Torii’s Head Chef Stefan Gadit peeled back the curtain on what it’s like serving one of India’s most private and beloved families, Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri, and their children, Aryan, Suhana, and AbRam. From favorite dishes to a secret entrance built just for them, Chef Stefan’s stories offer a rare peek into how the Khans dine, unwind, and quietly enjoy their meals away from the flashbulbs.
“They keep coming here quite often, and whenever they don’t have the time, they place an order and we have it sent over to their home,” Chef Stefan shared. “AbRam likes the sushi here, and Suhana has come on a few occasions with her friends. SRK has also been here a few times, mostly with Gauri and family. They celebrated Pooja Dadlani’s anniversary here. Shah Rukh Khan has enjoyed the lamb chops we serve here; that’s his usual order.”
The mention of Shah Rukh’s love for lamb chops is no surprise, the superstar has often spoken about his fondness for hearty, well-cooked meat dishes. But what adds an extra layer of intrigue is Torii’s built-in secret: a hidden entrance for the Khans. Designed to ensure privacy, it’s a feature few outside the inner circle even know exists. “Not everybody has access to the secret doorway; it’s for the Khans,” confirmed Chef Stefan.
This discreet setup aligns perfectly with the family’s preference for keeping personal moments away from the public eye. Even in the bustling celebrity hub of Mumbai, where every move is photographed, the Khans have managed to preserve a bubble of normalcy, one meal at a time.
Gauri Khan’s connection to Torii, however, isn’t limited to ownership. Known for her meticulous eye for design and detail, Gauri plays an active part in how the restaurant runs. “She gives us her two cents when she feels something is not right; so far, things have been going well,” said Stefan. “There is a good understanding between the management and Gauri Khan.”
Her involvement also extends to the menu. One of the chef’s most interesting anecdotes revolves around Gauri’s favorite dish, Thai curry. “She loves Thai curry, and I feel it’s done everywhere, and we shouldn’t do it, but that’s her favorite, so we have it. The dish is dedicated to her,” he shared with a laugh. It’s a small but telling detail, even in a place filled with fine Asian cuisine, the restaurant’s co-owner has her personal comfort food immortalized on the menu.
The rest of the family’s tastes reflect their personalities: AbRam, the youngest, enjoys sushi, playful yet refined; Suhana, often seen visiting with her friends, leans toward the social side of dining; Aryan, true to his reserved nature, tends to arrive late and keeps a low profile. “Aryan has been here on a few occasions, but I don’t know anything particularly about the food bit with Aryan. It’s usually later in the evening,” said Stefan.
For fans and food lovers alike, these details turn Torii from just another luxury restaurant into a living piece of the Khan family’s world , one that blends glamour with intimacy, celebrity with simplicity.
Between the hidden door, the personalized dishes, and Gauri’s quiet but consistent creative hand, Torii represents something beyond a celebrity venture.
