The new mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani has the spotlight on him for more than one reason. A man of fashion and faith, he has had the Internet curious about his suits and silver rings. While many are seeing it casually, others are more critically deciphering the intended message.

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who has made history as New York City’s first Muslim and Indian-American mayor, is known for his signature three-piece suits that are sharply tailored yet have a relatable, natural appeal. And rarely does he go without a tie, which can range from formal to funky.

The element of surprise in his otherwise formal dressing adds to the fun. He occasionally swaps black ties for bright ones. The dark suits are sometimes replaced with a tweed suit or a cardigan blazer. His unconventional sartorial picks often get noticed and discussed.

A hint of his Indian and Ugandan heritage is never far behind. Mamdani was spotted earlier this year posing in a kurta for a feature in the Muslim leftist magazine Acacia. He also celebrated the end of Ramadan in April in a white kurta with a striking red stole.

It’s also reported that in 2016, the suave politician wore a black Nehru jacket vest with red detailing and a bold blue suit made from African wax-print (Ankara) fabric for his mother Mira Nair’s film ‘Queen of Katwe’.

Besides his wedding ring, Mamdani wears three silver rings: one from his grandfather’s pilgrimage to Mecca, another from his wife Rama Duwaji’s trip to Tunisia, and a third handmade by her. All three look chic and contemporary.

Talking about his accessories, the NY mayor doesn’t go without his $160 Casio A1000MA-7VT. It’s both timeless and trendy and perfectly suits his sense of style. For shoes, his favourites are usually black and brown lace-up boots that match almost all of his suits.

While his fashion may be getting him all the attention, he is also a man of faith, a practicing Muslim and part of the Khoja Shia sect, something he has never hidden from the public eye and openly embraced, pledging to make things better for Muslims.
