Priyanka Chopra shares special note as she misses Rekha’s Umrao Jaan re-releasing in theatres; calls it her 'favourite movie'

Rekha's remarkable portrayal of the 19th-century tawaif, which is still among the best in her storied career, is at the heart of Umrao Jaan.

A restored 4K version of Rekha's iconic movie Umrao Jaan has made a triumphant return to theatres, providing viewers with an improved cinematic experience of the timeless masterpiece. Despite her disappointment at missing the re-release, actress Priyanka Chopra congratulated Rekha on social media, honouring the iconic star and the film's lasting legacy.

Priyanka took to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, June 22, as she shared a video with a clip from the timeless classic film along with a note, "Sad not to be there to support my favourite movie and actors. It will be a legendary night. Congratulations Re ma'am."

Backed by the National Film Development Corporation and the National Film Archive of India, Umrao Jaan has been revived under the National Film Heritage Mission, making its re-release a landmark moment for Indian cinema lovers. This restoration not only preserves a cinematic treasure but also brings it to a new generation of audiences in enhanced visual quality.

Rekha's remarkable portrayal of the 19th-century tawaif, which is still among the best in her storied career, is at the heart of Umrao Jaan. She won the coveted National Award for Best Actress for her subtle depiction of grace, suffering, and resiliency, solidifying the movie's legacy in Indian cinema history.

Talking about the film still connecting with the audience and resonating, director Muzaffar Ali said, “There is an uncanny continuity in carrying forward the essence of my Umrao Jaan. Almost three generations have revered this as an heirloom and legacy of their emotional evolution. It will be a twofold experience. Watching their grandparent’s sensibility and their very own discovery. It is a timeless film in every way ahead of time.”

In an interview Screen, he had also reflected on Rekha's hard work and dedication in the film and stated, “Working with her was a gift because this film is woven from quiet emotions. And it takes an actor like her to absorb those feelings and translate them onto the screen.”

Umrao Jaan portrays the moving story of Amiran, a young girl sold to a brothel by a dishonest police officer after her father dared to testify against him. As the years pass, Amiran changes into Umrao Jaan, a graceful and talented poetess and courtesan who captivates hearts with her grace and poetry. It was released in 1981.

Rekha delivered a soul-stirring performance in the titular role, pouring her heart into every frame. Her portrayal remains a testament to her versatility and depth as an actress, making Umrao Jaan not just a cinematic gem, but a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences even decades later.
