In a recent court filing dated June 24 and disclosed by People magazine, legal representatives for FKA Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, have contested Shia LaBeouf's legal manoeuvres as invasive and irrelevant to their pending lawsuit.
They stated that LaBeouf's legal team is "improperly seeking Plaintiff’s private financial and medical information that has no bearing on the issues in this case."
Twigs, 36, who accused LaBeouf, 38, of sexual and physical abuse in a December 2020 lawsuit, has submitted extensive documentation, including a psychotherapy assessment spanning over 1,300 pages, in preparation for their upcoming trial.
According to the court documents, Twigs' attorneys argued against LaBeouf's legal team's expansive requests for her personal financial and medical records, asserting that the legal team "seeks the entirety of Plaintiff’s medical history, going well beyond the injuries that are actually at issue.”
They emphasised that LaBeouf's inquiries extend beyond pertinent injuries and emotional distress linked to his actions, pointing out a lack of justification for access to her broader medical history.
The relationship between Twigs and LaBeouf began in 2018 during their collaboration on the film ‘Honey Boy’, amid LaBeouf's separation from his then-wife, Mia Goth. Their relationship concluded in 2019, with Twigs subsequently describing the experience as "the worst thing I've ever been through in the whole of my life” in a 2019 interview with The New York Times.
She alleged that LaBeouf knowingly transmitted a sexually transmitted infection to her, a claim reiterated in her lawsuit the following year.
In response to Twigs' legal action, LaBeouf acknowledged his history of alcoholism and aggressive behaviour, “No excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalisations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I'm ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”
The legal dispute is scheduled for trial on October 14th, underscoring the contentious nature of the allegations and the extensive legal preparations underway. Twigs' legal team continues to contest what they view as intrusive efforts by LaBeouf's representatives to obtain private information unrelated to the core issues of the case.
As the case progresses, both parties are poised for a legal showdown that will likely scrutinise not only the specifics of the allegations but also the boundaries of permissible discovery in such sensitive and high-profile litigation.
