FKA Twigs is one of the most prominent experimental musicians of our time with her sound and tone being unique to the entire industry.

The ‘Cellophane’ singer gave a testimony in the US Senate  on the regulation of Artificial Intelligence. She delivered an emotional letter to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, alongside Warner Music Group CEO Robert Kyncl, in Washington, DC.

In her testimony, the British singer advocates for the use of AI as a creative and commercial tool but emphasises on the consent of the artists and if they are able to keep control over their art. Twigs warns the Senate about the impact that no regularisation on AI tools will have on the society. She also added that the potential use of AI tools to replicate her voice or likeness leaves her “very vulnerable”.

“The fact that somebody could take my voice, change lyrics, change messaging... it really leaves me very vulnerable”, she explained. “If legislation isn't put in place to protect artists, not only will we let down artists who really care about what we do - that have spent a long time developing themselves - but it would also mean that fans wouldn't be able to trust people that they've spent so many years investing in”.

The singer went on to say that AI is very exciting for “future-facing artists” such as herself but added that due to the absence of appropriate legislative control, a third party exploiting her art for their own gain without her consent is unacceptable.

Twigs also revealed that she has been developing an AI deepfake of hers since a year. She revealed that it is trained in her personality and can use her exact tone of voice to speak numerous languages.  She chose to create her own deepfake to “extend my reach and handle my online social media interactions, whilst I continue to focus on my art from the comfort and solace of my studio.”

FKA Twigs will next be seen in ‘The Crow’ alongside Bill Skarsgård on 23 August.
