Manoj Kumar, born Harikrishan Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, British India (now Pakistan), passed away on April 4, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 87. Renowned for his profound contributions to Hindi cinema, Manoj Kumar was celebrated for his patriotic themes, earning him the affectionate moniker "Bharat Kumar."

Following the partition, Kumar's family relocated to Delhi, where he completed his education at Hindu College, University of Delhi. Inspired by the legendary actor Dilip Kumar, he adopted the screen name "Manoj Kumar" after watching Dilip's film Shabnam (1949).

Manoj Kumar's cinematic journey began with a minor role in Fashion (1957), but it was Hariyali Aur Raasta (1962) that marked his emergence as a leading actor. He impressed the audiences with performances in films like Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Himalaya Ki God Mein (1965), and Do Badan (1966). However, it was Upkar (1967) that solidified his status as a filmmaker with a patriotic vision. Encouraged by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri's call for promoting the "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" slogan, Kumar directed and starred in Upkar, portraying both a soldier and a farmer.

His dedication to nationalistic themes continued with Purab Aur Paschim (1970), where he explored the cultural contrasts between India and the Western world, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), that addressed the socio-economic challenges faced by the common man. In Kranti (1981), Kumar assembled an ensemble cast, including his idol Dilip Kumar, to depict India's struggle for independence.

Throughout his illustrious career, Manoj Kumar received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.

Manoj Kumar is survived by his wife, Shashi Goswami, and their two sons, Vishal and Kunal Goswami. He leaves behind a legacy of some timeless films that reflect the spirit and ethos of India.
