At the 70th Filmfare Awards, Akshay Kumar turned mentor for the evening with a piece of advice for aspiring actors. While sharing the stage with Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar, Akshay humorously cautioned newcomers against locking themselves into restrictive multi-film contracts.
“I want to say just one thing to all the newcomers and the upcoming newcomers — never sign a 3-film deal with any producer,” Akshay said. The audience burst out in laughter and applause getting the reference from Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Ba***ds of Bollywood using it as a modern-day example of the pitfalls faced by debutants.
“You must have seen The Ba***ds of Bollywood and what our hero had to go through,” Akshay remarked. “The film makes it clear what a debutant should and should not do.”
Akshay added with a grin, “Do not sign a 3-movie deal. Give your debutant freedom, allow them to run away. As it’s said — let them free, if they belong to you, they will come back.” SRK and KJo broke into a laugh at this statement.
The Netflix series, produced by Gauri Khan, follows Aasmaan Singh (played by Lakshya Lalwani), a young actor navigating fame and entangling producer contracts. Featuring Bobby Deol, Sahher Bambba, Raghav Juyal, Mona Singh, and Gautami Kapoor, the show mirrors the very struggles Akshay pointed out.
Reflecting on his own career, Akshay shared, “Money attracts money, and similarly, work attracts money. No work is big or small. Sometimes my role is small, but if I like the story, I do it because I know the movie will make history.”
