Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who was embroiled in a high-profile Renukaswamy murder case, is now knocking on the doors of a Bengaluru trial court to travel abroad, several months after securing bail.
The actor was arrested in June 2024 and was released on bail in December 2024, when 16 others, including actress Pavithra Gowda, were arrested, and they are on conditional bail.
Recently, Darshan filed a petition to allow him to travel to Dubai and a few other European countries from June 1, with new ones to be completed by June 25 2025. The actor's lawyer has moved the application because he has professional commitments in a foreign country.
But Darshan’s defence has hit a roadblock with the special public prosecutor opposing his travel plea, voicing fears of the actor leaving the country. The prosecutor said in court that there was little guarantee Darshan would return if he was permitted to travel outside of India.
A judgment on the petition before the trial court is anticipated on May 29, 2025. The result will decide if Darshan can go abroad, even though he is still under the court’s scanner in the current case.
