The North West constituency presents a fascinating political landscape shaped by historical oscillations between the Shiv Sena and the Indian National Congress. Over the past four decades, Congress has emerged victorious seven times, while Shiv Sena has clinched victory on four occasions. However, with Congress no longer in the fray, its cadre are now aligning with Sena UBT in its factional battle against Shinde-led Sena.

Comprising six assembly segments, the constituency reflects a diverse political tapestry. Three segments—Goregaon, Versova, and Andheri (West)—are under BJP's control, while one—Jogeshwari East—is with Shinde's Sena. The remaining two segments—Dindoshi and Andheri (East)—are under Sena UBT's influence. According to Election Commission (EC) data, the constituency boasts approximately 17.25 lakh voters.

The constituency's diversity extends beyond its political affiliations, encompassing a wide range of socio-economic and cultural landscapes. From Koli villages in Versova to slums near the airport, Aarey settlements, a substantial Muslim population in Jogeshwari, and active resident associations in areas like Lokhandwala and Juhu, North West presents a microcosm of Mumbai's vibrant demographic fabric.

The electoral history of the North West constituency reflects a fascinating interplay of political forces, with significant contributions from both traditional political figures and those from the film industry.

In 2014, Gajanan Kirtikar of Shiv Sena broke the dominance of the film industry in this seat by securing victory. Prior to his tenure, the seat witnessed a diverse range of representatives. From 1967 to 1977, the Congress held sway in the constituency. Renowned lawyer Ram Jethmalani also served as an MP during his tenure, initially with the Janata Party and later with the BJP.

From 1984 to 1996, the constituency was represented by Congress MP and film actor Sunil Dutt, adding a touch of Bollywood glamour to the political landscape. Shiv Sena also tasted success in the constituency in 1996 and 1998. However, in 1999, the seat returned to Sunil Dutt.

After Sunil Dutt's demise in 2005, his daughter Priya Dutt won the by-election and served as an MP from this seat, continuing the family's political legacy.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shiv Sena's Gajanan Chandrakant Kirtikar secured victory once again, defeating Congress's Sanjay Brijkishorlal Nirupam. Similarly, in 2014, Gajanan Kirtikar emerged victorious with a significant margin, while Gurudas Kamat of Congress came in second place.
