Dhanbad, a prominent Lok Sabha constituency in Jharkhand, is known as the coal capital of India due to its extensive coal mining industry. The city, surrounded by approximately 112 coal mines, has a total production of 27.5 million tonnes. Established in 1956, the Dhanbad district amalgamated the old Dhanbad subdivision, Chas, and Chandankiyari police stations of the then Manbhum district. With a population of 2,684,487 as per the 2011 census, Dhanbad has a literacy rate of 75.71%.

Dhanbad is predominantly urban, with 62% urban voters and 38% rural voters. The Scheduled Caste (SC) population is 16%, and the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population is 8%. The constituency also has a significant migrant population from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. The parliamentary constituency includes six Assembly seats: Bokaro, Sindri, Nirsa, Dhanbad, Jharia, and Chandankiyari, with the Chandankiyari seat reserved for the SC category.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Pashupati Nath Singh retained the Dhanbad seat, securing 827,234 votes. Congress's Kirti Azad came second with 341,040 votes, and Trinamool Congress's Madhavi Singh came third with 8,235 votes. Singh's victory margin was 486,194 votes, which accounted for 38.81% of the total votes cast. Moreover, amid the Modi wave in 2014, Pashupati Nath Singh retained his seat by defeating Congress's Ajay Kumar Dubey by a margin of 292,954 votes. Singh received 543,000 votes, while Dubey garnered 250,000 votes. Anand Mahato of the Left came third in this election. Finally, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Pashupati Nath Singh of BJP won the seat by defeating Chandrashekhar Dubey of Congress with a margin of 58,047 votes, which was 7.13% of the total votes polled.

The Dhanbad Lok Sabha constituency is set to vote in Phase 6 of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
