From the Harrier.ev to the XEV 9e and the Punch.ev, the electric vehicles (EVs) tested so far at the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) have performed handsomely, with all of them scoring a 5-star safety rating.
As of now, seven EVs have been crash tested at Bharat NCAP, including the Tata Punch.ev, Tata Nexon.ev, Tata Curvv.ev, Tata Harrier.ev, Mahindra XUV400, Mahindra BE 6 and Mahindra XEV 9e.
Surprisingly, all seven models have scored a 5-star safety rating in both adult occupant protection (AOP) and child occupant protection (COP) categories. What is even more surprising is the fact that all seven models are from Indian brands, Tata Motors and Mahindra, pointing towards the high safety standards achieved by them.
The cars are assessed at Bharat NCAP based on their crash-test performance across three sections -- AOP, COP and safety assist technologies.
The tests include a frontal offset deformable barrier test at a speed of 64 kmph, a side movable deformable barrier test at a speed of 50 kmph and a side pole impact test at a speed of 29 kmph. After the tests, the cars are assigned star ratings, ranging from one to five, based on their performance.
So far as points are concerned, the maximum a car can score in the AOP category is 32. For the COP category, the same is 49.
Following are the points scored by 5-star safety-rated EVs at Bharat NCAP.
| Model | AOP (Out of 32 points) | COP (Out of 49 points) |
| Harrier.ev | 32 | 45 |
| XEV 9e | 32 | 45 |
| BE 6 | 31.97 | 45 |
| Punch.ev | 31.46 | 45 |
| Curvv.ev | 30.81 | 44.83 |
| XUV400 | 30.38 | 43 |
| Nexon.ev | 29.86 | 44.95 |
The models with the best performance at Bharat NCAP are usually equipped with safety features such as six airbags, electronic stability control, and seatbelt reminders as standard. They also comply with the pedestrian protection norms.
