The Sikkim government has issued a travel advisory urging all tourists and visitors planning to depart from Gangtok on May 29 to leave by 6:00 am. The advisory comes as the hill state prepares to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the grand celebration of Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day.

The Tourism & Civil Aviation Department released the notice on May 26, citing the need for uninterrupted traffic flow and heightened security in and around the capital on the day of the high-profile event.

"As we are aware, the State of Sikkim has completed a remarkable milestone of 50 glorious years of Statehood on 16th May 2025. On this auspicious occasion, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India will be gracing the State with his presence on 29th of May 2025," stated the advisory issued by the Tourism & Civil Aviation Department.

"In view of this and to ensure smooth vehicular movement and tight security arrangements, all the visitors/tourists leaving Gangtok on 29.05.2025 are kindly requested to leave by 6.00 am," it added.

The early departure request aims to ease traffic on Gangtok’s narrow hill roads and support security protocols around the event venue. Tourists planning to leave the city on May 29 are strongly advised to begin their journey well before 6:00 am.

Travelers are also encouraged to check with local transport providers and hotels in advance and coordinate accordingly to avoid delays or inconvenience during this important day in the state’s calendar.

In addition to Gangtok, security has been stepped up across Sikkim and parts of North Bengal, including Alipurduar, where PM Modi is expected to travel later the same day. His itinerary includes a helicopter ride from Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok in the morning, followed by an afternoon visit to Alipurduar and a departure to Patna via Hasimara Air Base.

On May 26, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang reviewed final arrangements at Paljor Stadium. The state government, in coordination with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and local agencies, is working around the clock to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the celebrations.

Observed every year on May 16, Sikkim’s Statehood Day commemorates the state’s historic merger with India. The 2025 golden jubilee marks not just a ceremonial milestone—it reflects five decades of democratic growth, socio-economic progress, and cultural integration.
