PM Narendra Modi mourns loss of Indian squash legend Raj Manchanda

Indian squash legend Raj Manchanda passed away at the age of 79 on Sunday, said his family members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (December 4) mourned the demise of the legendary squash player who was an Arjuna awardee and six times national champion.

PM Modi, taking to social media, wrote: "Saddened by the passing away of Shri Raj Manchanda Ji, a true legend of Indian squash known for his dedication and excellence. In addition to the laurels he won, it was his passion for the sport and his ability to inspire generations that truly set him apart."

"Beyond the squash court, his service to the nation was reflected in his military service too. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," he said further in his condolence message.

Raj Manchanda remained champion of the Indian squash fraternity for five years, from 1977 to 1982. His skills and game were impossible to beat during his reign.

During this period, he proudly represented India in the Asian Championships and various international tournaments, consistently defeating some of the toughest competitors in the sport.

A significant milestone in his career came in 1981, when he faced Pakistan's squash legend Jahangir Khan at the Asian Championships.

His breakthrough arrived in his early 30s when he secured his first national title while representing the Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Corps (EME) of the Indian Army. His remarkable achievements were recognized with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1983.

As captain of the Indian squash team, he led them to a silver medal at the 1981 Asian Team Championships in Karachi. Under his leadership, the team also earned a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Jordan in 1984.
