Tanmay Srivastava, who shared the dressing room with talismanic cricketer Virat Kohli during India's victorious campaign in the 2008 U-19 World Cup, will be seen donning a new role in the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). Tanmay has been named as one of the umpires for the cash-rich T20 tournament, which gets underway from March 22.
Tanmay had played a massive role in the U-19 final against South Africa as he chipped in with a vital 46 off 74 balls, helping India pile a respectable 159/10 in 45.4 overs. Tanmay's 46 was the highest from the Indian camp. South Africa's hard luck in ICC events continued as rain saw the target get reduced to 116 in 25 overs and the Proteas could only manage 103/8 before running out of overs. India had won the contest by 12 runs as per the DLS method.
Tanmay hung his boots from professional cricket almost five years ago, following which he switched to officiating matches in the domestic circuit. He also has some IPL experience as a player representing the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) franchise in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. However, he was a complete flop in the tournament as he could only manage eight runs in three innings. While he was not successful in the IPL, Tanmay's boasts of solid credentials in the domestic circuit, where he accumulated 4,918 runs in 90 first-class matches.
Tanmay's appointment as an umpire in IPL 2025 was shared by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) on social media. “A true player never leaves the field—just changes the game. Wishing Tanmay Srivastava the best as he dons a new hat with the same passion!” UPCA wrote on their official X account.

Co-incidentally Tanmay's U-19 batchmate Kohli will kick-off the proceedings in IPL 2025 as defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the season opener.
