'I’m not going anywhere from ODI cricket': Rohit Sharma breaks silence on retirement speculations

Rohit Sharma broke silence on his ODI future after leading India to a successful campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on Sunday. The Indian skipper confirmed that he has no plans to retire from ODIs at the post-match press conference. India won the Champions Trophy, which was their third, by beating New Zealand by four wickets.

“One more thing… I’m not going anywhere from ODI cricket,” Rohit said at the post-match press-conference.

Ahead of the clash, speculations were rife about Rohit's future in ODIs, with many anticipating that the Indian skipper would hang his boots just like he did in the T20Is after winning the World Cup last year. Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja were three veterans who retired from T20 internationals.

Ahead of the final, Shubman Gill was asked if there has been any retirement discussions in the dressing room, to which the vice-captain said all discussions were on how to win the Champions Trophy. "All discussions are on how to win the Champions Trophy. About this decision (Rohit's retirement) there has been no talks in the team or with me. I don't think Rohit bhai is also thinking about it," Gill said at the pre-match presser.

Rohit saved his best for the last. The opener, who wasted the starts in the previous matches, made the most impact and gave India the start they would have hoped for in the 252-chase in the final. The Indian skipper did the bulk of the scoring in the first powerplay as Shubman Gill, his opening partner, enjoyed the show from arguably the best seat in the house.

Rohit went on to hit 41-ball 50 and stitched 105 for the opening wicket with Gill. The Indian skipper was stumped for 76(83), an innings laced with seven 4s and three 6s.

Rohit is widely recognized as one of the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history. He holds several records, including the most double centuries in ODI cricket (3) and the most centuries in Cricket World Cups (7). In T20Is, he shares the record for the most centuries (5) and was the first player to achieve this milestone. Additionally, he holds the record for the fastest T20I century by an Indian, reaching the mark in just 35 balls.
