World Sparrow Day is observed every year on March 20 to raise awareness about the declining sparrow population and promote conservation efforts. Once a common sight in towns and villages, sparrows are now becoming rare due to urbanisation and environmental changes. The day encourages people to take action to protect these birds and their habitats.

World Sparrow Day 2025 Theme

Each year, the celebration revolves around a specific theme to guide awareness efforts. The theme for World Sparrow Day 2025 is "A Tribute to Nature’s Tiny Messengers." This theme aims to reconnect people with sparrows and inspire conservation activities.

Sparrows were once a familiar part of daily life, reminding people of their connection with nature. Conservationists use awareness campaigns and community events to emphasise the importance of protecting these birds.

History of World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day was first observed in 2010, initiated by the Nature Forever Society (NFS) in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation. The NFS was founded by Indian conservationist Mohammed Dilawar, who was recognised by TIME Magazine in 2008 as a ‘Hero of the Environment’ for his efforts to protect sparrows.

Since its inception, the day has gained global recognition, highlighting the impact of habitat loss, pollution, and climate change on sparrows and other common bird species.

Significance of World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day is observed to focus on the alarming decline in sparrow populations and the urgent need for conservation efforts. Once a common sight in urban and rural areas, sparrows have now become increasingly scarce. This day serves as a reminder to protect not only sparrows but also overall urban biodiversity. It encourages individuals, communities, and organisations to take action by creating bird-friendly environments, spreading awareness, and supporting conservation initiatives. Beyond a one-day observance, the goal is to inspire long-term efforts to ensure sparrows continue to thrive in our surroundings.

How World Sparrow Day Is Celebrated

People celebrate World Sparrow Day in various ways to contribute to sparrow conservation. Some of the key activities include:

  • Installing Bird Feeders: Providing food and water sources for sparrows in gardens and balconies.
  • Creating Nesting Spaces: Setting up small nesting boxes to offer safe shelter.
  • Hosting Awareness Programmes: Schools, colleges, and organisations conduct events to educate people about sparrow conservation.
  • Participating in Conservation Groups: Many people join bird conservation initiatives to take direct action in protecting sparrows.
