A newly discovered planet could change the search for life. Scientists have confirmed a super-Earth orbiting a nearby sun-like star. The planet, HD 20794 d, sits in the habitable zone. It could have conditions suitable for liquid water.
Confirmed After Years of Study
Oxford scientist Dr Michael Cretignier first detected the planet in 2022. He spotted slight shifts in a star’s light using old data. These shifts hinted at a planet’s gravitational pull. However, the signal was too faint to confirm.
To verify, an international team studied data from two instruments. HARPS and ESPRESSO in Chile provided 20 years of observations. Advanced methods ruled out errors and stellar activity. Finally, they confirmed the super-Earth’s existence.
Dr Cretignier said the process took years of careful work. "It was a joy when we confirmed it," he said. "Its location, just 20 light years away, is exciting."
A Unique Orbit and Future Potential
HD 20794 d has a mass six times Earth’s. It follows an elliptical orbit around its star. This means it moves across the habitable zone. Sometimes, it is too hot for liquid water. Other times, it may be just right.
While it is unclear if the planet supports life, scientists are hopeful. Upcoming telescopes will study its atmosphere for biosignatures. These include the Extremely Large Telescope and LIFE project.
Dr Cretignier said this planet could be crucial for future research. "I’m excited to see what we learn next," he added.
