In the heart of the dense Saranda forests of Jharkhand, an extraordinary teacher is changing young lives in the most remarkable way. Gulshan Lohar, a mathematics teacher at Barangay Uktam High School in Baranga village, has been inspiring students for over 11 years by writing on the blackboard with his feet.
Born without hands, Gulshan never saw his disability as a barrier. From his early school days, he mastered the art of writing with his feet, turning what many would see as a limitation into his greatest strength. His educational journey itself is a testament to his determination. He traveled 74 kilometers daily to attend college, supported by his mother and brother every step of the way.
Gulshan's academic achievements are remarkable. He not only completed his postgraduate education but did so with exceptional results. "My only goal was to prove that disability cannot stop learning or teaching," said Gulshan in an interview with the BBC.

His journey wasn't easy. Financial constraints posed significant challenges, but support came from unexpected quarters, including financial assistance from the Chief Minister for his B.Ed. degree. Through it all, Gulshan remained focused on his dream of becoming an educator.
Today, Gulshan's classroom sessions are nothing short of inspirational. Watching him skillfully grip chalk between his toes to explain mathematical concepts leaves both students and visitors in awe. His students describe him as patient and encouraging, while parents see him as a guiding light for the entire community.
What makes his contribution even more significant is the fact that Baranga village, located in West Singhbhum's remote forests, faces many educational challenges. Many teachers hesitate to work in such remote areas, but Gulshan chose to return to his village to serve his community.
His wife Anjali and young daughter are his biggest supporters. "He is the backbone of our family and our entire community, an inspiration not just to me but to dozens of young children who see him teach every day," Anjali shares proudly.
The Jharkhand Education Project Council has officially recognised Gulshan's contributions, describing him as "worthy of national recognition." His story has sparked important conversations about inclusive education and supporting teachers with disabilities.
