Australia’s first astronomy nanosatellite, SpIRIT, has completed commissioning. It has now begun its important scientific mission phase. SpIRIT was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This event took place in December 2023.

The satellite has orbited Earth more than 9,000 times. This mission is a joint effort between two countries, led by the University of Melbourne and the Italian Space Agency. The work is also supported by the Australian Space Agency.

Testing Technology in Space

In the early phase, SpIRIT tested new technology. It deployed a winged thermal system for temperature control. The satellite extended a “selfie stick” to capture photographs. Images showed SpIRIT adorned with partner emblems. Some pictures confirmed the satellite’s successful operation in orbit. These tests affirmed that SpIRIT is ready for a long-term mission.

What is the Aim of SpIRIT?

SpIRIT’s main goal is to detect bursts of gamma-rays. These bursts come from collapsing or colliding stars. An X-ray detector scans large areas of the sky. This detector was provided by Italy’s HERMES project. When bursts occur, SpIRIT sends alerts to Earth. These alerts help larger observatories to follow up quickly.

Advancing Australia’s Space Role

SpIRIT found the Crab pulsar in just 700 seconds. This pulsar is a well-known gamma-ray source. Scientists expect SpIRIT to provide vital new data. It will offer insights into high-energy cosmic events.

This is Australia’s first space telescope with a foreign instrument. It shows Australia’s growing importance in space science. SpIRIT’s lifetime is expected to exceed 1,000 days. The mission will boost technology and scientific knowledge. It will help humankind understand extreme parts of space.
