Nestled in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra Valley, Pong Dam wetlands are buzzing with activity. Over 92,885 migratory birds from 85 species have already arrived this season. The numbers are expected to exceed one lakh by December’s end, officials said.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu, during his visit to Pong Dam, highlighted the increasing bird count. Last year, 85,000 migratory birds were observed from October to January. Pong remains a key destination for avian visitors, with an average of 100 species recorded annually.
A Haven for Migratory and Native Birds
The wetlands, 250 km from Shimla and 190 km from Chandigarh, host native species like the red jungle fowl, Indian cuckoo, and paradise flycatcher. Among migratory visitors, bar-headed geese stand out, travelling thousands of kilometres from Central Asia to escape harsh winters.

Sukhu praised the region’s biodiversity and directed efforts to ensure bird safety. Tourists can enjoy boat rides, with additional speedboats planned to enhance their experience. Basic facilities are also being developed for visitors, officials added.
Tourism Boost and Educational Initiatives
The government aims to promote tourism by introducing water sports at the Regional Water Centre near the Pong Dam barrage. Sukhu said 30,000 tourists visited the area last year, reflecting the region’s growing appeal.
A Wildlife Interpretation Centre has been built in Basa for Rs 3.2 crore. The centre educates visitors on bird conservation and migratory patterns. It offers dormitories for students to connect with nature and learn about biodiversity. Sukhu encouraged bird enthusiasts and students to visit Pong Dam and witness its vibrant wildlife.
