NASA has released its final plan for advancing research and technology in space, particularly in low Earth orbit (LEO), as the International Space Station (ISS) approaches retirement in 2030. The agency’s Low Earth Orbit Microgravity Strategy sets clear goals to continue space exploration, support scientific research, and develop commercial space stations with the help of global partners.

NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy emphasized the importance of this roadmap, "As we near the retirement of the International Space Station, these objectives solidify U.S. leadership in space. Together with our partners, we’re ensuring the benefits of space exploration continue to grow, while preparing for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond."

What’s in the Strategy?

The final framework was shaped after reviewing over 1,800 comments from experts, industry leaders, and the public. It includes 13 goals and 44 objectives under seven key areas:

  • Developing commercial space stations for long-term human presence.
  • Supporting scientific research and technology.
  • Preparing for missions to the Moon and Mars.
  • Encouraging international partnerships.
  • Promoting STEM education.
  • Growing the space workforce.
  • Engaging the public in space-related advancements.
Why It Matters

NASA believes the microgravity environment in low Earth orbit is crucial for testing technologies and systems needed for long missions. Future deep space explorations—like traveling to the Moon or Mars—will rely on lessons learned from operating in microgravity.

Robyn Gatens, NASA’s director for the ISS, highlighted this transition, "Low Earth orbit will remain a hub for scientific discovery and technological advancement, even as we move from the ISS to a new era of commercial space stations."

Collaboration with Commercial Partners

NASA stressed the importance of working with private companies to create new space stations that support research and missions. This partnership will ensure continuous human presence in space, improve risk management for future Mars missions, and keep international cooperation strong.

John Keefe, NASA’s strategy director, explained, "These objectives help NASA prioritize what’s most important for the future, ensuring we have reliable systems, strong partnerships, and the skills needed for our next steps in space."

By preparing for the post-ISS era, NASA’s strategy aims to strengthen the space economy, support cutting-edge science, and pave the way for humanity’s future explorations.
